Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

Kingsley is at risk for behavior, New Hope Only determination. He currently is not acclimating to shelter life well, and is allowing minimal handling. He also has a corneal ulcer and has reportedly not been eating while in care center, which may require further follow up with a veterinarian.

For a New Family to Know: Kingsley is described as friendly affectionate, playful, pushy and excitable. He enjoys playing tug with soft stuffed animals and small balls. He was being fed Pedigree dry food and Cesar wet food mixed 1-2 times a day and loves Milkbones and boiled chicken breasts. He is considered very house trainedm will use the bathroom outside or on pads, is well behaved when left home alone and was crate trained but does not do well in the crate. Date of assessment:: 9/17/2018

Summary:: Kingsley has allowed minimal handling in the care center, escalating to lunging and growling upon approach at times. Because of this behavior combined with his previous bite history, we believe a handling assessment is not appropriate to conduct at this time.

Date of initial:: 9/15/2018

Summary:: Timid, allowed handling

IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: Kingsley charges the kennel bars when people walk into the room he is housed in at the care center, growling and snapping. He is unable to be removed from his kennel by care center staff as he continues to lunge forward and snap when an attempt is made to open his kennel.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY

Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable

Recommendations:: Place with a New Hope partner,No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: Place with a New Hope partner: Kingsley has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake, charging at the kennel bars, growling, and snapping when he is approached. Kingsley has been observed to escalate rapidly to lunging and snapping upon approach. Because of the behavior observed in shelter along with his previous owner surrender notes, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home. No children (under 13): Kingsley has a previous bite history and has also allowed minimal handling in the care center; we believe he may be best set up to succeed in an adult only home at this time.

Potential challenges: : Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Resource guarding

Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding: Kingsley's previous owner notes that he may snap when his food bowl is approached. We recommend that Kinglsey be left alone while eating, and that food guarding behavior modification steps (available at ASPCApro.org) be utilized if this behavior is problematic in his future home. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Kinglsey's mouth, and any time something is removed he should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. He should be taught the "drop" cue and trade-up games. Bite history/risk of future aggression: Kingsley has a bite history and seems to escalate quickly to snapping and biting, so this is an established behavior that he offers when he feels threatened. Kinglsey needs careful behavior modification and management to prevent future bites. We recommend only force-free, reward-based training methods for Kinglsey as more aversive techniques are likely to increase fear and increase the risk of aggression. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Kinglsey has attempted to lunge and snap upon approach in the care center; guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is recommended to assess behavior after decompression in a new home environment. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing or exposing Kinglsey to new and unfamiliar situations.
