He is easily leashed and is tolerant of being picked up. Coco follows the handler to the assessment room for his handling assessment. ENERGY LEVEL:: His previous owners describe Coco as a high-energy dog. In the care center he has been active and enthusiastic. He may have a low threshold for arousal and needs guidance to learn how to appropriately channel that energy when he becomes overstimulated. He will need daily mental and physical stimulation and exercise, and force-free, positive reinforcement-based training may help him to learn impulse control and to train desirable behaviors that can be rewarded.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: Place with a New Hope partner,No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13)-Due to Coco report bite history at home and touch sensitivity, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. Place with a New Hope partner- Due to all noted concerns displayed in a home environment, the behavior department recommends Coco be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Coco to acclimate comfortably to his new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Coco to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Coco presents with outside of the care centers.

Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful,Bite history (human),Resource guarding

Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding- Potential resource guarding was noted in the previous home as Coco was observed to growl and snap when engaged with items and at times bite when attempting to remove them. For this reason, we advise against ever removing items from Coco possession without safely trading for an item or greater or equal value. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended to aid in safely managing/modifying this behavior in a new home environment. Please see the handout on Resource guarding. Handling/touch sensitivity- Coco has growled and tense when his paw was handled, showing discomfort with touch in certain areas. It is important to avoid touching Coco's paws at this and to be cautious when touching him in other areas as we do not know where he may have other sensitivities. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Coco to be more comfortable with this. Please see the handout for Handling/touch sensitivity. Fearful- Coco is a bit fearful at the care center. It is important to always go slow and give Coco the option to walk away from any social interaction. Coco should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Cco choice to approach a new person or thing. Coco would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. Please see the handout for Fearful. Bite history (human)- Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is recommended to assess behavior after decompression in a new home environment. Force-free, reward-based training is advised when introducing or exposing Coco to new and unfamiliar situations.
