This pet needs emergency placement. Please click here to go to our emergency placement page for more information. Due to the detailed behavior issues, this animal is only available for foster/adoption through one of ACC's New Hope Partners. If you are interested in adopting or fostering, please fill out the pre-screener form. This animal is not directly available for adoption through ACC and is only available by completing the pre-screener form. Adoption inquiries sent directly to ACC will not receive a response. Pre-Screener Form Findy is in need of emergency placement due to behavior concerns. Findy has a history of lunging at staff members and a bite history with a six year old child, where he bit them on the hand leaving red marks. Findy is social with staff and is affectionate. Medically, Findy has minor dental disease. Findy came into the shelter as an owner surrender. They described him as a very active and playful dog that prefers contact on their own terms. In shelter he has been fearful and tense but warms up to handlers with time and a slow approach. Findy is reported to have bitten the resident child on the hand. The bite did not break skin but left it red and irritated. Due to these behaviors we recommend an experienced home with no children. Findy may take time to warm up to new people or places. He has made many friends with caretakers here, though has some apparent stranger danger and may lunge, hard bark, or growl at select novel strangers. He would benefit from an experienced, adult only home with only adults. A staff member writes: Findy has made strides in being more confident and comfortable here in the shelter. He came to us as a scared and timid dog and is now a calm and confident pup. He is slowly becoming a volunteer and staff favorite as we learn more about his goofy and fun personality. He enjoys pets and will lean his entire body weight against you to get top tier cuddles and pets from staff and volunteers alike. He enjoys playing with toys and running around in the backyard. He is a gorgeous dog inside and out! He cant wait to meet you here at Manhattan Animal Care Centers! A volunteer writes: What a lovely guy is Findy! He started out a bit shy but has really blossomed. The other day I spent time with Findy in the backyard. He is just as charming as can be.

ENERGY LEVEL:: HIGH

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: NO CHILDREN: Due to fearfulness and anxiety we recommend a home with only adults. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Anxiety,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Bite history (human)

Potential challenges comments:: Findy's previous owner states that he will lunge, snap, and attempt to bite when being held/ restrained. FEARFUL/ANXIETY: Findy demonstrates high levels of fear, stress, and anxiety within the care center. This has lead to him flailing, panicking, and otherwise appearing shut down in select situations. With time he has opened up more, appearing soft, social, and more readily walking or approaching new people or places. There has been one instance where Findy lunged towards a person during a walk. See handouts: Decompression Period, Fear and Defensive Aggression, Generalized Anxiety. Findy is reported to have bitten his owner's six year old child on the hand. The owner was not in the room when this happened. She said she heard her child cry out, and when she entered the room saw a red mark on his hand. The bite did not break skin, but left it red and irritated. Please see handout on Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression.
