Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

Oreo is at risk for behavioral concerns. He has shown fearful behavior and sensitivity to handling while in the care center. Oreo has a multiple-bite history and escalates quickly to snapping and biting, so this is an established behavior that he offers when he feels threatened. He has been diagnosed with dental disease that may need follow up care but otherwise there are no medical concerns at this time.

For a New Family to Know: Oreo is described as mellow and independent. He has a low activity level and likes to lounge around the home rather than play with any toys. In the home, he would sometimes follow the owner around from room to room but would usually be in his favorite spot. In the home, Oreo was fed dry food only brand Blue. Oreo was kept mostly indoors and is not house trained. Owner stated that unless she leaves wee wee pads out, Oreo will urinate and defecate all over the home several times a week. When left alone in the home, Oreo was well behaved. He is crate trained and would have access to go in and out of a crate throughout the day. Oreo knows the cues come and stay. For exercise, Oreo was taken on brisk walks on the leash. When on leash, he does not pull. Owner was able to walk Oreo off leash and stated that he would wander around at first but then come back when his name was called.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY

Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to all the concerns reported in his previous home environment, we believe Oreo would be best set up to succeed in an adult only home. New Hope Only: Because of Oreo's multiple bite history combined with his response to being handled at times, we believe he would be best set up to succeed if placed with an experienced rescue partner. We recommend allowing Oreo to have a period of decompression so that he can acclimate to his new home environment so that his behavior can be more thoroughly assessed before placement into a permanent home. Guidance from a professional trainer or behaviorist is highly advised.

Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Oreo has a multiple-bite history and escalates quickly to snapping and biting, so this is an established behavior that he offers when he feels threatened. Oreo needs careful behavior modification and management to prevent future bites. We recommend only force-free, reward-based training methods for Oreo as more aversive techniques are likely to increase fear and increase the risk of aggression. Handling sensitivity: Oreo has bitten multiple times upon being touched/pet in his previous home environment. He is also reported to growl and snap when restrained or brushed. It is important to avoid to be cautious when touching him in other areas as we do not know where he may have other sensitivities. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Oreo to be more comfortable with this.
