Summary:: Flint is showing a high level of fearful with potential for defensive aggression. He has escalated to growling and snapping at staff. He is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time.

Summary:: 4/14: Flint keeps his distance with his ears back as a F MMB dog passes him on his walk.

Summary (2):: 4/15: Flint is curled on his bed refusing to move. A slip lead is secured and he is pulled forward. Once at the front of his kennel he hops out and walks with handler. He pulls on and off throughout the walk. When handler reaches to clip him, his commissure shortens. She allows him to jump up into his kennel and a hook is used to remove the leash. 4.13 Flint is fearful exiting the kennel with body a tense and flattened ears. Flint is taken for a walk where he softens up and walks next to staff member to entire time. On the walk back Flint began to tense up as he heard dogs barking. He went back into his kennel but his leash is taken off with a hook due to Flint not allowing staff member to touch the rope. 4/12 Upon approach, Flint is laying in the back of his kennel shaking with wide eyes and tail in between legs. He was easily roped and ignored neighboring kennels and went on a walk with staff member. As soon as he went outside he had his tail up, ears perked and sniffed around. When it was time to bring Flint back, tail immediately went in between legs, ears down and wide eyes started again. When staff member clipped the leash, Flint immediately redirected and snapped at staff's hand. He immediately jumped in the kennel afterwards and he was unleashed. He returned to the corner he was in upon approach with fearful body language. 4/10: Flint is laying in the back of his crate with whale eyes. When the door opened he begins to growl. The crate is pulled into the yard and the door open so he can leave on his own. He remains in the back but is quiet. After a few minutes, he allows handler to secure him with the slip lead but refuses to exit. The crate is tipped forward and he eventually steps out. He is walked back and forth around the yard. Then brought on a short walk. He runs at the end of the leash, pulling. When walking up the ramp, he turns and growls at the handler. He returns to his kennel and a hook used to remove the slip lead.

ENERGY LEVEL:: flint has been displaying defensive fearful behavior in the shelter, whale eyeing and growling at staff. Flint has also displayed being uncomfortable with handling, snapping at staff when they attempt to clip his leash

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to escalating to higher level warning signs, we recommend an adult only home for Flint. Place with a New Hope partner: Flint has been slow to adjust to the care center environment. We have no known behavior information about him in his previous home. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression

Potential challenges comments:: Handling/touch sensitivity: Flint is only allowing for minimal handling in the care center. At times, staff have to use a hook to remove his slip lead as he will not allow them to safety clip for removal. Flint gives clear warning signs that he is comfortable when staff approach or attempt to interact. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Flint has escalated to growling and snapping during his time in the care center. His signs of discomfort must be respected; Flint should never be forced to interact, he should always be given the opportunity to walk away from situations or people he finds uncomfortable. We recommend a slow approach and, reward-based training methods for Flint. More aversive techniques are likely to increase fear, increase the risk of aggression, and decrease Flint's quality of life. Please see handout on Fearful with Potential for Defensive Aggression.
