Hello, my name is Sapphire. My animal id is #64960. I am a female black brindle dog at the . The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 6 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 6/5/2019, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- moving - no pets allowed.

Sapphire is at risk for behavior concerns. When approached in kennel, Sapphire has been observed to growl at certain handlers/strangers. Once outside of her kennel, she remains fairly fearful and wary of strangers though has been observed to warm up slowly with a soft/slow approach. She has been diagnosed with canine infectious respiratory disease complex.

A staff member writes: Would you believe this girl was nervous when she came in. I knew there was a puppy in her and we took plenty of walks and hung out in the sun. Sapphire was easily please with treats and patience. Now, she greets everyone with a wiggly body-building her confidence. Sapphire is looking for a loving home, and a family that understands her shyness. Come to Brooklyn Animal Care Centers to meet her!!!

DVM Intake Exam Estimated age: 1.5 years according to o Microchip noted on Intake? negative History : o/s Subjective: BARH Observed Behavior - tense, nervous, shaking, whale eyes. Did not warm up. Low growl in cage. Muzzled for exam. upon intake, Sapphire had a loose body. I kneeled down to pet her and she began to give kisses and was very friendly. allowed all handling.

Basic Information:: Sapphire is a 1 year and 6 month old Black brindle and white female large mixed breed dog. Previous owner had Sapphire for about 1 year and got her from a friend. Sapphire was surrendered to ACC due to landlord issues

How is this dog around strangers?: Around strangers, Sapphire is very timid at times and may be shy when she approaches. She is very friendly and will give you kisses if you kneel down with her.

How is this dog around children?: Sapphire has been around children of all ages. She likes children and is very playful and outgoing

How is this dog around other dogs?: Sapphire has been around small and large dog. She is friendly and does not pay much attention to other dogs.

How is this dog around cats?: Sapphire has not been around other cats.

Resource guarding:: Sapphire does not resource guard food bowls toys or treats. She may bark sometimes if someone she does not know approaches the home

Bite history:: Sapphire has not bitten another animal or person

Other Notes:: Sapphire has received a bath from the previous owners. She is tolerant. She isn't bothered if she is held or restrained

For a New Family to Know: Sapphire is a High energy, friendly, affectionate, playful and shy cat. Previous owner's favorite thing about Sapphire is that she is very friendly and gives kisses. Sapphire loves playing with toys and ropes. She is not crate trained. She knows commands like sit, stay and lay down.

Summary:: According to Sapphire's previous owner, she has interacted with small and large dogs. She is friendly and does not pay much attention to other dogs. 6/6: When off leash at the Care Center, Sapphire is introduced to a novel male dog. She is nervous with a hunched posture and a lowered head. Sapphire does not greet the male and avoids him for the entire session. 6/9: Sapphire is introduced to a novel female dog today. She continues to be nervous, slow in her movements and keeps her distance from the other dog. 6/13: Sapphire's behavior remains the same.

ENERGY LEVEL:: Sapphire has been observed to exhibit a medium level of energy during her interactions in the care center.

IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: 6/21: Sapphire has shown improvements over her stay. She has been seen greeting novel staff and volunteers with a soft wiggly body. She readily accepts treats and bounces around the room when offered toys. Her kennel presence has also improve- and she walks to the front, greeting every person with a soft posture. 6/7/19: When approaching her kennel, Sapphire was observed to be laying down near her kennel door. The handler approached and crouched down, as Sapphire moved her nose closer to the handler. The handler then offered some treats to Sapphire, which she received very softly. As she was engaged with her treats, the handler moved a bit closer to Sapphire, when she was observed to tense, side eye and low growl toward the handler.

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due Sapphire's overall level of fear and wariness of strangers combined with her propensity to easily startle, we feel she may be best set up to succeed in an adult only home environment at this time.

Potential challenges comments:: When approached in kennel, Sapphire has been observed to growl at certain handlers/strangers. Once outside of her kennel, she remains fairly fearful and wary of strangers though has been observed to warm up slowly with a soft/slow approach.
