Star

Hello, my name is Star. My animal id is #195704. I am a desexed female black dog at the . The shelter thinks I am about 9 years 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 3/14/2024.

Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

Star is on emergency placement for behavioral reasons, due to high levels of fear and stress in the shelter setting. Medically she has an ear infection and CIRDC. She is also not eating and has lost considerable weight while in the shelter. She is very difficult to support because of her level of fear and stress.

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow

Upon intake German Potato Dumpling was sitting in his carrier and very quiet. When I went into the police truck to move the carrier out of the truck, he started to bark, growl and lunge at the side of the carrier I was on. K9 was called to get the dog out of the crate which was achieved after some quiet, patience and offering of cheese. Unable to scan or collar due to behavior.

Date of intake:: 3/14/2024

Spay/Neuter status:: Yes

Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray (Unknown History)

Date of assessment:: 3/16/2024

Summary:: Star has displayed high levels of FAS and doesn't allow handling. Due to these behaviors, Star is not a candidate for a handling assessment.

Summary:: 3/26/24: Star greets another dog through the gate with tense body. She greets briefly then turns away.

Summary (6):: 3/19/24: Star is laying in the back of the kennel when approached. She does not approach forward when coaxed. Handler is able to reach forward slightly to place the leash on her head. Star immediately stands up and walks out, no pulling, tail a bit tucked and whale-eyed. Out in the yard she sniffs and walks slowly to the back pen. She is placed on a drag leash. She initially paces the pen, whines, seeks exit at the door and paws at it. She can be coaxed over by the handler, is tolerant of touch on neck and ears but does not seek out more when handler stops. She wanders to the middle of the pen, sits, and begins to pant. She is given a few moments outside before being re-leashed and brought back inside. 3/17/24: Star is laying in the back of the kennel, slightly tense and whale eyed. She allows the leash to be placed over her head gently. She stands up on her own accord and walks out. She is taken to the street where she pulls midly, sniffs around, and at times does flinch away from sudden sights or sounds. She tolerates brief touch from the handler and does not otherwise seek out attention. She does not react to passing humans or animals. At the end of the walk her leash is easily clipped and she is walked back inside.

Summary (7):: 3/17/24: Star is laying in the back of the kennel when handler approaches, curled up in a ball. As handler unlocks the door she stands with a hunched back, tail tucked, whale eyeing, and lip licking. She turns away from the handler and puts her face in the corner. Handler tosses treats but Dumpling ignores them. Handler offers the leash and Dumpling begins to seek exit, digging at the corners in the back of the kennel with her paws. Handler kneels with the leash loop in the kennel and sits for a few minutes. Dumpling continues to stand, spin, seek exit, and lay back down. Handler eventually lassos her and Dumpling comes forward and exits the kennel. She stops hard as her neighboring dogs begin barking at her and tries to re-enter the kennel. She is not easily redirected and handler has to muscle her out of the room. Once out she walks on her own, pulling moderately with a tense body, ears back, and low tail. In the backyard she immediately relieves herself and is aloof to the handler. She climbs up on the bench and looks out over the fence blockers. She is hypervigilant and flinches when there are loud noises. When an exuberant dog passes by she does not react, standing still with a neutral expression. She is returned to the kennel without issue. 3/16/24: Star is sitting at the back of the kennel, crouched down, tail tucked, wide-eyed and a bit tense. She is not interested in treat lures such as cheese when tossed to the front of the kennel. She sits still as a slip lead is gently placed over her head, and she is able to be coaxed and led out on leash. She walks with a slightly tense body and tucked tail. Outside she is often trembling, however does at time sniff her surroundings. She retreats to the back of the pens and sits on a bench. When coaxed by the handler she does slowly crawl over, and allows the side of her head and ears to be scratched. She softens slightly in body and spreads out to lay down more on the bench. When coaxed by handler she does walk around and explore, again allowing and at times briefly leaning in to petting behind the ears on side of her head. She urinates outside. GPD allows the leash to be clipped and is walked back to the kennel with no concerns.

Summary:: bark, growl and lunge

Date of initial:: 3/15/2024

Summary:: Reported growling and lunging during admission

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: Place with a New Hope partner,No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Star behavior in the care centers Star should go to a home with older, behavior-savvy children. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to all noted concerns displayed in a care center environment, the behavior department recommends Star be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Star to acclimate comfortably to her new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing German Potato Dumpling to new and unfamiliar situations.

Potential challenges: : On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Star is reported to growl,bark,lunge when uncomfortable and at the care center. Star displays shut down behavior and has made it difficult for handlers to take her out on walks. Positive reinforcement should be utilized to help Star associate people and novel handling with things her likes such as treats and toys. Please see the handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression. On Leash Reactivity: Star has been observed to hard bark, lunge, and snap at people walking by while on leash. Star will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach her to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
