I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 10/17/2018, with the surrender reason stated as animal circumstance - abandoned by previous owner.

Molly is at risk for behavior, at the care center her behavior has rapidly escalated, and she has attempted to bite handlers. We recommend placement with a new hope partner. Molly is overweight but otherwise healthy.

A Volunteer Writes: HELLO MARSHMALLOW! This sturdy Gal is a Sweetheart! Omg! She looks like she could care less and would be very lumbering but she was raring to go out! What a wiggle bottom! She was very good about having the leash put over her head...always a good sign! She gave no #%£&$ about all the doggie raucous goin' on as she strutted past the other kennels. We grabbed a couple of toys & went out to the backyard playpen...And Bang! Momma was Set to Rumble! No shrinking violet this! She is Very playful and full of controlled energy! She never got over excited, but she never stopped moving either. She was so curious about everything in her environment! Smells, chase the ball, make a pee, chase the ball, get a hug, ooo...make a poops, hey what's that puppy doing in the next playpen?, more hugs?! Yes Please! And those eyes?! Mesmerizing! One Hazel, one Blue. Yes! I Love Marshmallows!!!

Upon intake, Molly at first had a loose, wiggly body and allowed all handling. When the owner left, she began to hard bark and lunge at the door. She turned to Cleatus and they snapped at each other. They were easily separated and did not try to engage with each other again. She pulled very hard on the leash.

Basic Information:: Molly is a two year old large mixed breed female dog. She was surrendered to our facilities after the original owner left the dog with a person for three months. The most recent owner brought in Molly and Cleatus due to not being allowed to have large dogs in their apartment.

Previously lived with:: 1 adult, 1 child

How is this dog around strangers?: Around strangers, the owner described Molly as being aggressive. They stated that she is protective over her family. She will play exuberantly with adults.

How is this dog around children?: She has lived with children and is described as being relaxed, playful, and respectful. She will not play with children.

How is this dog around other dogs?: Molly has lived with other dogs. She and Cleatus reportedly really get along and enjoy each other's company. They will play and spend time with each other. She may not always play with other dogs or her play style will be very rough.

How is this dog around cats?: Molly is reported to be aggressive towards cats.

Resource guarding:: Molly is not bothered when her food, toys, or treats are touched.

Bite history:: Molly has never bitten a person or other animal.

Other Notes:: Molly will reportedly urinate and defecate indoors. She is also described as being hard to control and barks too much. When there are loud storms or fireworks, she is terrified and panics. She is not bothered if disturbed while sleeping or resting, when given a bath, when brushed, or when her nails are trimmed or her paws are touched. She is afraid when someone unfamiliar approaches the home or her owner.

Has this dog ever had any medical issues?: No

Medical Notes: Molly has never been to the vet and has not had any injuries or health issues.

For a New Family to Know: Molly is described as playful, confident, pushy, excitable, and anxious. When you are home, she likes to either follow you around closely or be in the room with you. She likes to play with ropes, balls, and chews/bones. She will play fetch and wrestle. She has been kept mostly indoors. She slept on the floor with a blanket. She ate wet and dry food 2-3 times a day. She was not fed any particular brand of food. She seems house trained and will only have accidents if she is not walked. She will use the bathroom on grass or cement. When left home alone, she will destroy household items or the furniture/walls. She has not been left alone in a yard nor has she been crate trained. She knows the commands sit and put it down. She is used to off leash walks, going to dog parks, brisk walks on the leash, and running for exercise. She pulls very hard on the leash. When off leash, she will wander but come back when called. Her favorite thing to do is play with her rope. The owner's favorite thing about her is how playful she is and how she likes to wrestle with her housemate, Cleatus.

Summary:: Molly approached the assessor with a soft body. She was social throughout the assessment, allowed all handling, and displayed no concerning behaviors.

Summary (1):: 10/19: When introduced off leash to a male greeter dog, Molly allows greeting but mostly avoids interaction, seeking attention from handlers.

Summary (2):: 10/20: Molly allows polite greeting but mostly seeks handler attention, following handlers around the yard.

ENERGY LEVEL:: Molly is described as having a high level of activity. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.

IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: Upon intake, Molly displayed some concerning behavior, since then she has been highly social with human handlers. Molly has allowed leashing from her kennel without issue, and outside of her kennel seeks attention from known and novel handlers. She is somewhat timid and fearful initially with new people, but with slow approach becomes immediately soft and social. With known handlers, Molly is soft and wiggly, seeking attention constantly with loose body, wagging tail and open mouth. When uncomfortable in the presence of other dogs in playgroup, Molly seeks comfort from human handlers.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY

Recommendations comments:: Place with a New Hope partner: Due to all concerns in the previous home as well as Molly's rapid escalation to aggression at the care center, we recommend he be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Molly to acclimate comfortably to her new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Molly to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Molly presents with outside of the care centers.
