Animal Profile

Sprouts

Hello, my name is Sprouts. My animal id is #56318. I am a desexed male black dog at the . The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 3/4/2019.

Reserved

Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

Sprouts is at risk, new hope only determination, for behavioral and medical reasons. Sprouts has a history of biting another dog in his previous home environment and has shown a concerning level of dog reactivity in the care center. Sprouts would be best suited for placement with a new hope rescue partner that can provide behavior modification and reward based training to help correct and manage the challenging behaviors. Medically, Sprouts was diagnosed with canine infectious respiratory disease complex which is contagious to other animals and will require in home care.

Date of initial:: 3/4/2019

Summary:: Excitable, social

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Sprouts so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.

IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: Sprouts has been social with human handlers, seeking attention when outside of his kennel. He will lean in for petting and keeps close proximity to handlers. He is highly treat motivated and in cue training sessions with handlers has been working on sit, down, impulse control and leave it cues. He has progressed well through those steps and know verbal cues for sit. Sprouts has displayed dog reactivity while at the care center. He will attempt to cage fight with other dogs that react to him, and out in the yard will hard bark at dogs in neighboring pens. With some distance, Sprouts can ignore other dogs, but in closer proximity will hard back and lunge.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable

Recommendations:: Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: Due to the high level of dog reactivity Sprouts displays and his bite history to another dog, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Potential challenges: : On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: Sprouts is very reactive to dogs at the care center, lunging towards them, growling, and barking. Please see handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration.
