Summary (7):: 3/29/24: Sage is standing at the front with neutral body. She eats chicken through the bars but when done immediately grabs the leash. A second handler calls her and offers more chicken. She releases the leash, takes the chicken then grabs the leash again. This time she pulls the leash all the way in, tugging and vocalizing. Handlers toss treats in and call to her. She doesn't immediately let go but eventually comes forward and starts taking treats again. However, this behavior is repeated again, grabbing leash and pulling while vocalizing. Interaction is ceased due to stress levels. 3/28/24: Sage was reported to continue to grab the leash in kennel. When handlers approach her kennel, she is pacing back and forth in kennel and jumping around. Handler offers her ham which she takes through the kennel bars. When second handler presents the leash in kennel, she grabs it but is easily redirected with ham and treats. She is then leashed with high value treats and removed from kennel without issue. She is taken out for a street walk where she pulls mildly, often jumping on handlers and mouthing their hands with moderate to hard pressure. When treats are offered, she takes them hard. She will seek attention from handlers by nudging their hands and allowing petting. Sage does not react to dogs or other stimuli. After the walk, Sage is returned to kennel without issue 3/27/24: It is reported by Animal Care Staff that when they went to take out Sage he began leash biting intensely, yanking the leash into the kennel. He is not redirected with treats or toys. 3/15/24- Sage was at the front of his kennel with a neutral body, he was easily leashed and taken for a street walk. He walks with a moderate pull at times and others he is loose leash walking next to handler. He had no reaction to any stimuli while outside. He took treats gently from handler. He was taken for his assessment, he was social with handlers and would get mouthy when seeking attention. He was returned to his kennel without issue.

ENERGY LEVEL:: Sage previous owners describe Sage as a high-energy dog. In the care center he has been active and enthusiastic. He may have a low threshold for arousal and needs guidance to learn how to appropriately channel that energy when he becomes overstimulated. He will need daily mental and physical stimulation and exercise, and force-free, positive reinforcement-based training may help his to learn impulse control and to train desirable behaviors that can be rewarded.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No young children (under 5)- Due to his high- Energy, mouthiness/jumping, and reported resource guarding we recommend an adult only home. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to Sage's leash biting and anxiety displayed in care, we recommend he is placed with one of our New Hope Partners.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,House soiling,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Anxiety,Handling/touch sensitivity,Destructive behavior,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Leash-biting

Potential challenges comments:: House soiling- Sage is reported to have accidents off his wee wee pad in the house. He will need guidance and consistency to learn to eliminate outside. We recommend crate training, frequent walks, rewards for eliminating outside, consistent feeding schedule, and careful monitoring when inside. Please see handout on House soiling. Resource guarding- Sage has displayed tense body and hovers over objects that they find valuable, such as random objects, toys, and treats. For this reason, we advise against ever removing items from his possession without safely trading for an item or greater or equal value. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Destructive behavior- Sage is reported to show destructive behavior in the home, such as chewing on furniture, walls, shoes, household items, etc. He will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys so he can engage in necessary chewing behavior with. Please see handout on Destructive Behavior. Mouthiness/Basic manners control- He has shown some mouthiness in the care center and jumping during his assessment which was reported at prior home. Little pressure is applied, but this is a behavior that should be extinguished through training alternate behaviors and lack of reward.Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Mouthiness. Touch sensitivity- At Sage's prior home he has been reported to be uncomfortable with handling at times, when a person is Held/restrained and his collar is touched. It is important to always go slow and give him the option to walk away from any social interaction. He should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. Anxiety- Sage appears anxious at the care center, whining and spinning, during his assessment. If it does appear in a future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving him other things to focus on to alleviate his anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. Please see handout on general Anxiety. On-leash reactivity- At Sage's prior home he has been observed to react to stranger on leash, lunging towards them. As Sade plays well with strangers, this reaction is likely due to excitement and frustration, we recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Biting: Sage has been observed to jump up, bite, and tug leashes into his kennel. This behavior is not able to be redirected using treats or toys. It is reported to be very intense. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach him to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
