Hello, my name is Paige. My animal id is #163892. I am a desexed female brown tabby cat at the . The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 7 months 3 weeks old.

Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

Paige is on the emergency placement list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

She needs to go to her a home where she can be the only pet. In the care center, she spends most of her time in the quiet coziness of her den, not being receptive to interacting with caretakers. ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 2/21/23 Lying down inside den, but looks out through the opening. Her eyes are dilated and she lip licks when coaxed, but remains still and quiet as I extend the scratcher tool and offered chicken. She sniffs it but is too nervous to eat. She allowed gentle petting on the head and body, stiffening in place, but doesn't display any other reaction. May just need time to settle in. 2/27/23 Hiding in cat den, completely hidden from view. She does not come out when coaxed with treats or toys. I speak to her softly and keep the interaction brief to reduce stress. Hopefully she explores her enrichment later when the room is empty. 3/01/23 Hiding in cat den. I lift the den cover today and and see that she's pressed against the back of her den, ears flat, face tense and tail wrapped tightly around her body. She hisses and tries to back away further when I place some squeeze-ups in her den. I do not push further interaction at this time to reduce stress. 3/06/23 Hiding in cat den upon approach, completely hidden from view. I spend some time speaking to her softly and leaving treats by the entrance of her den. She does not feel like coming out to interact today and prefers to stay hidden. 3/7/23 In her den completely hidden from view and I spend some time speaking softly to her hoping to maybe coax her out today. She doesn't seem interested and I leave some treats near the opening of her den. 3/08/23 Hiding in cat den upon approach, initially hidden from view. I lift her den cover and she begins hissing immediately, body hunched with her face tense and her tail pilo-erect and wrapped tightly around her body. She is obviously very stressed so I keep the interaction brief. I place some squeeze-ups next to her den, speak to her softly and end the session. 3/9/23 Due to her lack of response I start focusing more on desensitization first. I sit in front of her cage and speak softly to her before leaving a tissue paper pipe cleaner sprayed with feliway on her door. She shows no response to our interaction and remains in her den. 3/11/23 In den completely hidden from view, I continue to try and desensitize her to our presence and speak softly for a moment before leaving a few treats and leaving. 3/13/23 Paige displayed similar behaviors as previous sessions which included staying in her den when offered treats or scented enrichment. She has not shown any interest in interaction so far. We are continuing to try to desensitize her with various offerings that she can engage with when the room is empty. 3/14/23 Paige is in her den completely hidden from view. I speak softly to her for a moment and lightly toss some dry treats into the cage for her to eat if she wants to. She continues to show no interest in interacting or in anything we are offering to her. When I move the den cover to get a visual on her, she immediately begins to low growl with face and body tense. She appears to have a very high level of FAS. GAN

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Somewhat chatty

CHARACTER TYPE: : Timid,Shy ,Independent,Skittish

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: New home adjustment period,Destructive,Inappropriate elimination,Fearful

Potential challenges comments:: Paige appears to be a highly fearful cat that is reported to be destructive and will urinate outside of her litter box if upset by someone/something. Please see behavior flyers for more info.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Single-pet home,Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Reported to be fearful with children and other cats and is known to become aggressive with other cats as well.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Paige is hiding in her den as the assessor approaches. She shows no interest in treats offered and cannot be coaxed out of the den. She is sitting in the den with a tense face and body, eyes wide and dilated, and ears forward. She is tolerant of brief and light touch from within the den but remains uncomfortable and squishes herself into the back of the den. When the assessor comes back after the interaction to take a photo and removes the den blocker from the front window of her den, Paige lunges and strikes at the clear window while hissing. She is reported to be fearful around both children and other cats and will hide. She will become aggressive at times with other cats and will try and fight. We feel she would do best as a single pet in a quiet and low-traffic, adult-only home. Paige displayed similar behaviors during her re-assessment. Paige is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has tried to swat and is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time. She has a known history of behavioral issues that need to be addressed.
