Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 09/25/25 Wilson is introduced to a female helper dog while off leash at the care center. Wilson is allowed into the female dog's pen, off-leash. As he enters the pen on his own, he displays a neutral body, appearing aloof as he ignores the female dog. He will enter her pen exploring, taking his time to approach the female dog. As he does, Wilson remains neutral in body, allowing the female dog to sniff him. The female dog will trade off excessive body contact and Wilson is tolerant to it, remaining still as he sits there. Wilson will walk away slowly remaining neutral and the female dog will run after him, jumping onto him, over him as well paw slapping him. The female dog's persistence makes Wilson conflicted; he runs away to a separate pen in order to create space and decompress and once he does, will approach the gate line after the gate door is closed. They are now in separate pens and Wilson remains present with a slow swaying tail. This concludes the interaction.
Summary (7):: 10/29/25 Wilson is reported to be reluctant when attempting to return him to the facility. Wilson is on a walk with a staff member and Wilson is seen lying down across the street from the care center, reluctant to move as he is pancaked on the ground. Another staff member will assist, and He is coaxed with treats and taken down the block to commence his walk and is returned through the second floor where he will enter with no issue. Wilson is returned to kennel. 10/25/25: Wilson is on his kuranda bed as the handler approaches his kennel. As they open the door, Wilson walks up to the front of the kennel slowly and allows the handler to leash him with ease. He will then walk to the live room on a loose leash and is clipped to a drag leash. He will immediately begin engaging with the snuffle mats on the floor and sniffing around the room. The handler then waits for Wilson to engage with them and will toss him a treat each time. He will eventually stand in front of them and the handler begins to shape a hand target. Wilson engages readily for a while until the handler tosses some treats into the snuffle mat to see if he will reengage. Once the session is over, Wilson is switched from his drag leash to the slip leash and ret rned to his kennel where he is secured safely. 10/15/25: Staff approached Wilson remained quietly laying on his bed at the back of the kennel, looking at the staff member but not responding to baby talk and encouragement. A treat was tossed into the kennel and staff walked away. For a few minutes, other dogs in the room were offered treats and given commands and praise. When the staff member next approached Wilson’s kennel, he was sitting at the door quietly showing some interest. A milkbone was offered through the kennel door which Wilson took very gently. He was given the sit command which he followed quickly. 09/24/25 (Assessment Note): Wilson is lying in the back of his kennel upon the handler’s arrival, trembling as the handler spoke softly to him. He eventually approached the front and allows the leash to be gently placed over his head. In the assessment room, he tolerated being collared and drag leash without issue. Wilson paced and continued to seeks exit but allowed handlers to pet him, leaning in for more touch while maintaining a neutral frame. He tolerated running with handlers without becoming aroused. During the knock and toy portions, Wilson did not react, briefly sniffing the toy before walking away. For more information, see behavior assessment. 09/24/25 Wilson is standing neutrally in front of his kennel door with a relaxed frame. He is easily leashed and taken out for a walk. Wilson appears aloof, as he trots without checking-in, sniffing different areas of the sidewalk and immediately commencing his walk. Wilson doesn't take any treats when administered. Wilson remains aloof, ignoring the handler. He is returned to the facility where he will enter the building as well as his kennel.

Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety,Bite history (human)
Potential challenges comments:: Handling / Touch Sensitivity / Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: During intake, Wilson showed significant fear and sensitivity to handling and has bitten in the past. While he allowed a slip lead to be placed inside the apartment, he pancaked and attempted to retreat when leaving, resisting efforts to be lifted into the vehicle. He did not tolerate being touched on the underside, requiring a second slip lead to guide him into the van. These behaviors suggest discomfort with restraint and unfamiliar environments. Training should focus on building trust through slow, low-pressure interactions and cooperative care techniques to reduce fear and improve handling tolerance. Please see the handout on Handling / Touch Sensitivity / decompression period. Bite history (human): On 7/22 at an unknown time, the mother went to pet Wilson when he bit her on her thumb leaving a small laceration. We do not have any other information regarding the bite. Anxiety: During his handling assessment, Wilson displayed signs of anxiety, including heavy panting and seeking exit routes. These behaviors indicate stress in unfamiliar or confined settings. Training should include creating a calm, predictable environment, using enrichment to promote relaxation, and gradually exposing him to new experiences to build confidence. Please see the handout on generalized anxiety.
