Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow

KNOWN HISTORY:: Lionel was surrendered to the shelter however there is no known information on his behavior history in a home environment.

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: 6/26/19 Timid. Hissing and growling. No swatting and he did not try to flee.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 6/27/19 Crouched near the back with wide eyes. Stress meows on approach but sniffs the scratcher tool carefully and allows two gentle strokes on the head then shifts away while low growling. Ate treats offered once the interaction ended. Very tense. Needs time to adjust. 6/28/19 Sitting upright by the front. Meows when spoken softly to. Stands with tail high, head bunts and body leans into the hand when petted However, after a few strokes he becomes annoyed and went in to nip at the hand. Pulled back before he got to it. 6/29/19 Conflicted. Alert, sitting on haunches. Sniffed treats. Gave me head butt and then used both paws to swat me with nails and a stress meow coming close to drawing blood. Use caution. 7/08/19 Lying down by the back, looking at assessor with squinted eyes. He leans forward to sniff hand and accepts gentle petting on his head and body. Seems under the weather, tolerates petting all over his body. 7/9/19 Under the weather. Resting by the back with a soft body. Doesn’t engage when coaxed with treats and remains unresponsive when petting. Not interested in treats. Not feeling too good today. 7/11/19 Meowing for attention by the front. Sniffs the assessor’s hand when extended, head-bunts it and allows petting. Wants to explore out of the kennel. Sweet body!

Reaction to assessor:: Lionel is resting near the back of the kennel. He makes eye contact with slightly dilated pupils.

Reaction when softly spoken to:: Lionel comes forward and sits upright by the door. He is curious of his surroundings.

Reaction to cage door opening:: Lionel greets the assessor with tail high.

Reaction to touch:: Lionel carefully sniffs the assessor’s hand when extended. He allows petting along the head, leaning in for cheek rubs and arches his body when petted on the back. He eats all treats offered.

Reaction to being picked up:: Lionel remains soft during pick up.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Lively

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Social,Sweet,Curious

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Experience

Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable

RECOMMENDATIONS:: No other cats OR multi-cat home with adopters experienced with introducing new cats

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Although Lionel's behavior appeared appropriate to go to cat parents with an average amount of experience during the assessment, he displayed stressed behavior during his first few days in the care center and escalated to swatting and stress meowing when he felt overwhelmed. Due to the behavior displayed, we believe he would do best in a home with experienced cat parents who will allow him to adjust to his new home and family at his own pace. He has otherwise warmed up a considerable amount and we believe he has potential to warm up even more.
