Animal Profile

George

Hello, my name is George . My animal id is #138329. I am a desexed male brown tabby cat at the . The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 3 months old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 5/4/2022, with the surrender reason stated as not a fit - too many animals already.

Reserved

Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

George is on the emergency placement list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association, and will swat when someone goes near him. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 5/08/22 Hiding inside den, no response when softly spoken to. I slowly extend scratcher and place treats next to the opening while coaxing him. He quickly sticks his head out to watch me with wide eyes as I take the scratcher away, but will retreat inside again and watches me with face partially hidden. I continue to coax him, blink, and play purring sounds. Did not try to pet today, needs time to adjust. 5/10/22 Remained hidden in cat den. He did not come out when coaxed with treats, toys or compliments. I do not push further interaction today, needs time to adjust. Hopefully he eats his treats later when he feels more comfortable. 5/11/22 Continues to hide in his den. He tenses when spoken softly, making eye contact with wide pupils. He lunges forward and swats from within when slowly offering squeeze ups through the vent hole. I spent time talking softly and blinking to him. Kept the interaction short as he is very stressed out there. Will move to holding room to give him a calmer environment. 5/12/22 Inside den, no response when coaxed. I slowly extend scratcher and place treats in front of the den. When slowly taking the scratcher away, he'll watch from the opening but remains mostly covered behind the den. He won't expose himself and blinks a few times, but will tense up and focus on the scratcher with any slight movement. I kept coaxing and played purring sounds for him. Gave him space and eventually he'll poke his head out to eat, but quickly turns to watch me when I approach. He blinks when spoken to and then shrinks back inside. Will come out to eat the rest of the treats later. I tried offering more but he'll spit from inside the den so I placed treats a little further away from the opening. 5/13/22 Lying sideways in his den. He remains in place on approach but starts to spit and growl. I spent time talking softly and putting treats gently through the vent holes. He continued to growl throughout but soft blinked from time to time. I toss some treats next to the den portal then closed the door and walked away. He comes out to eat them and I see him when walking back. We made eye contact and he would return some soft blinks. He followed the red laser dot for a moment, then I rewarded with more treats and left him alone. He walked to the front after and ate them all, then retreated to his den. Fearful but definitely curious. Will continue to build positive association. 5/15/22 Hiding in den and looked out of the opening, hissing. Tossed treats near him but he did not show any interest. He grumbled and hissed as I spoke to him. Placed some treats on a scratcher and slowly put it near the opening of the den. He struck the scratcher, scattering the treats. Very stressed, retreated further into the den so he could not be seen at all. When I checked on him later, he was peering out of the den and hissed at me. - GAN

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Skittish,Independent,Timid

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Adult cat socialization,Fearful

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: During our interaction, George was crouched on his kuranda bed on approach. He tilted his ears when spoken softly and retreated very tense. George hissed and struck the scratcher tool when offered treats, then retreated to the other side to avoid the interaction. George is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room. He has tried to swat, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. George would benefit from socialization to help him come out of his shell a little more. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
