Animal Profile

Blanca

Hello, my name is Blanca. My animal id is #156365. I am a female white cat at the . The shelter thinks I am about 10 years 1 months 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 10/18/2022, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- moving.

Reserved

Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

Blanca has developed a deep corneal ulcer, possibly as a result of a viral infection and has a poor appetite. The ulcer requires more intensive treatment than we can provide in the shelter setting. Blanca is nervous with treatments, but has been allowing all handling with patience and a slow approach. Blanca will need follow up care provided by a veterinarian, or a consultation with an ophthalmologist.

This pet needs emergency placement. Please click here to go to our emergency placement page for more information. I have been known to shower my favorite people in love! I am finding the shelter a bit overwhelming. Outside one-on-one I am a great big cuddle bug. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. A volunteer writes: Darling Blanca is sweet-natured and affectionate. She may be napping when you visit with her but please take a little time to say hello because she will be so happy you did! She really loves to be around people. Blanca especially enjoys leaning into pets. She does so with enthusiasm! Just a few moments after meeting her, Blanca was nuzzling my hand and kneading her little paws. An instant friend! This easy going and well mannered kitty has so much love to share and we know she will be a wonderful addition to her forever family. Please check here for updated adoption hours.

Hx: Corneal ulcer. Has been on treatment with doxycycline, SQF, Simbadol, Mirataz, famciclovir, topical serum, ofloxacin. Sent photos and medical record to ophthalmology specialist for a consult: These can be frustrating, however your plan sounds good. We could consider a graft procedure, however based on the amount of blood vessel formation on the cornea, I am hopeful this will heal on its own. Based on the size and depth of the ulcer, it is not surprising if this takes 3-4 weeks to completely heal. For now, I would continue the plan like you are doing, and consider adding in oral famciclovir 250 mg PO BID for 14 days. Make sure she is wearing an e-collar as well. The blood vessels surrounding the ulcer will continue to move in about 1 mm/day. Eventually the vessels will fill in the ulcer and get it to heal. If the ulcer deepens and/or perforates, then a graft can be considered. S: Hiding in box. Tense for exam, hissed and struggled a little. Took photos of the ulcer - uploaded to Vet Docs O: QAR, MMs pink and moist -Corneal ulcer OS is deep, with organized thickened margins (no loose flaps of conjunctival tissue today). Dorsally there is corneal opacity and neovascularization. No blepharospasm or elevated third eyelid. Conjunctiva are pink, no mucoid discharge. -No discharge OD, nose A: Deep corneal ulcer, may take a long time to heal P: 1. Discontinue doxycycline to not bother pt more than necessary 2. Extend famciclovir until 12/20 3. Extend serum and ofloxacin drops until 12/20 4. Found a soft E-collar, will place this on her today 1088

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 10/20/22 Resting inside the den on approach. Alert with eyes wide. Accepts pets with the scratcher tool but shows no interest throughout the interaction. Remains immobile in place. Needs time to acclimate. 10/21/22 On top of the den, low body posture, hunched, tail wrapped and large pupils with a shifting gaze. Ignores treats, and catnip but allows gentle petting on the head. 10/24/22 Quiet in den facing towards kennel door. Allows gentle petting through den door. Eats treats offered through vent holes. Ignores laser and catnip. 10/25/22 Hiding inside den, but shifts around when I place treats through the opening. She sniffs and starts to eat, poking her head out slightly to look at me. She lip licks and retreats back inside, so I continued to offer more and she will eat them. She likes squeeze ups and will turn to lie near the opening, watching me and blinking softly. Has potential! 10/31/22 Resting in den with head looking out from the opening. She blinks and lip licks but sniffs squeeze ups and starts to lick it from the scratcher. She eats each time I offer it and will stick her head out all the way to eat, but I could not get her to come out more. She is feeling under the weather so I focused on building a positive association. 11/2/22 Seems to be under the weather, caught sniffling. Resting softly in the den on approach. She becomes alert when slowly turning den sideways to interact. Eyes soft, ears relaxed and forward. She allows pets and slowly head leans against the hand. Remains comfortable in the den throughout the interaction. Licked some chicken treats when offered. 11/8/22 Seems to be under the weather. Sniffling in place while accepting pet inside the cubby. Alert with soft eyes, squinting. She head bunts the hand and purrs. Remains soft throughout the interaction. 12/12/22 Resting curled up inside hidey box with head tucked in and tail wrapped around body. When spoken to and opening the door, she perks up and crawls out of the box to greet me and eagerly accepts dry and puree treats offered. She chomps down on the puree tube and allows petting on her head and cheeks. When stroking her body, she steps back, flicks her tail, and crouches down, then recovers fairly quickly and comes forward again for more treats. During pick up attempt, Blanca steps back, tenses up, short stress meows, grabs on my hand, and gently nips me to let go. A few seconds after placing her down, she continues to display social behaviors at the front, accept more puree and dry treats, and allows gentle petting on her head.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Social,Shy ,Calm,Sweet,Affectionate,Curious

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: New home adjustment period

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 2

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Blanca is a social, calm, and sweet cat who has warmed up since her initial evaluation. She was lynig down at the back of the top cubby and immediately walks to the shelf in the main kennel area and climbs down to greet me at the front with a soft body and eyes. She eagerly accepts treats offered and welcomes petting on her head. Blanca leans in hard for cheek rubs and raises her hips and tail in the air, but takes a step back when reaching around her body. She is very treat motivated, so the assessor coxes her forward to attempt pick up. During pick up, Blanca tenses up a little but but allows petting all over when held for a few seconds. After placing her back down, she continues to appreciate more treats, petting, and attention. Blanca interacts with the observer, appreciates attention, is easy to handle and tolerates all petting. She will likely need time to warm up to her new home. She scratched and bit during the surrender appointment when attempting to transfer Blanca into carrier, more details in bite report. This cat is showing behavior appropriate for cat parents with either an average amount of cat experience or demonstrate a basic understanding of typical cat behavior.
