Animal Profile

Tiger Tails

Hello, my name is Tiger Tails. My animal id is #242078. I am a male brown tabby cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 11/20/2025, with the surrender reason stated as animal circumstance - abandoned by previous owner.

Tiger Tails is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and is deteriorating in the Adoptions room. He is now displaying signs of frustration and overstimulation. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: Cheek and chin scratches make me so happy! I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some feline body language together! I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets.

Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow

KNOWN HISTORY:: Tiger Tails as brought in without information on his behavior history in a home environment.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 11/23/25 Vol. During cleaning, was in den. With the portal door closed, was unhappy, grumbling, hissing and pawing at the front of the den. But came out once the door was open and calmly at breakfast and treats. Later, was sleeping in den. Woke when kennel door was opened and came out to eat a cup of Temptations and squeeze-up. Meowed loudly when finished, then eagerly ate Temptations through the bar and squeeze-up from the tube. Allowed head and neck scratches while eating but pulled away when done and did not seek further attention. Sniffed around, looking for more treats. 11/24/25 FB47 Tiger Tails came out of the den with the promise of treats and came forward, appearing very sweet. We did clicker training, which went well, and then he accepted petting while eating, but when the treats ran out, he quickly overstimulated and became slightly reactive. 11/25/25 FB73 Upon approach Tiger Tails is in his den, pupils dilated, stress meowing and coming to the front of the kennel as the handler opens the kennel door. Handler clicks and treats to load the clicker, repeated about ten times. Handler has Tiger Tails target, having him touch his nose to their fingers then click and treating. This is able to be consistently repeated 10 more times, afterwards interaction is ended and Tiger Tails calmly walks over to his bowl of dry food and begins to eat. 11/26/25 Vol Tiger tail was inside den sleeping, sprawled on his side with one rear paw extended out of the den. He woke up appearing startled, and hissed once, then appeared to relax when given some slow blinks. He came out of kennel slowly to sniff at a catnip mouse. His eyes were wide and dilated. He came to front of kennel to eat a treat and sat calmly. We did a little clicker training, rewarding him for targeting the click stick with his nose. He did well, so I also tried rewarding him for allowing small pats on the head with the click stick. He gave a few small unhappy-sounding meows, but otherwise appeared calm, and continued to enthusiastically eat treats. Kept interaction short due to previous notes of overstimulation. 11/29/25 Vol Is in den lying down looking forward through clear cover when approached, spoken to and door opened.  Meowed a few times while in den and came out of den and to the front. Offered dry treats on scratcher tool. Sniffed. I left treats in front of him. He ate them. Also ate squeeze up offered on a spoon and then on scratcher tool. Allowed petting and cheek rub by hand.  Was slightly moving the linens further inward, swatted.  ~ GAN

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Social,Sweet,Curious,Skittish,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Overstimulation,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: Overstimulation, but he is treat motivated and has potential to continue with clicker training to build positive association with petting and attention. 12/5/25 At front of kennel eating food. Stress meows when spoken to and opening the door. When he calms down, I offer treats and he eagerly accepts them but grumbles while eating. Tolerates petting on the head when distracted with treats. When stroking his body, he short stress meows and hisses with his paw swatting the air in front of him. He recovers fairly quickly, targets his nose to my finger, and is rewarded with more treats for being calm and targeting. Sensitive to touch or overstimulation when pet on the body.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Tiger Tails initially approached the front of the kennel seeking attention, alert with wide eyes and forward, erect ears. He head-butted the hand and accepted petting along his head and body but frequently scanned the room, appearing visually overstimulated with a low, flicking tail. After walking away, he hissed. The session was ended to reduce stress, and he relaxed with a catnip pillow toy, rubbing his head on it. Tiger Tails tolerates attention and petting but appears stressed in the shelter. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
