Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 2. Blue

Andy was brought out of the carrier, allowed to be scanned for a microchip, collared, and briefly pet. Andy had a low and tense body and was picked up to be placed in a carrier.

Basic Information:: Andy is an approx 4 year old brown tabby and white cat that was brought into BACC as a stray.

KNOWN HISTORY:: Andy was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to this cat’s behavior in a previous home.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 06/18/19 Andy is laying in the center of his kennel with a neutral face and body when approached. He tenses up his body and shifts his weight away from the assessor when opening his kennel. He will lean in to sniff the assessors hand, then lick his lips and looks around nervously. He will allow all petting and lean in at times, but is too focused on his environment and a little nervous. Still needs time to adjust. Andy has the potential to warm up. 6/19/19 Much like yesterday, focused on his environment and wary, moving his head around and pulling back from touch. Sniffed my hand and treats but with just a little gentle petting he made a light swat and a small hiss. 6/21/19 Gave him space, did laser. Offered squeeze up treat to food which he liked and it got him eating canned food. Adding sign. 06/22/19 Hiding behind his hiding spot when approached, Andy will come forward when offered a tray of tuna puree. He will hiss or grumble when the assessor was near, so there wasn’t much petting today. He was left alone and sprayed some feliway in his kennel. 6/23/19 Lying down by the back, but becomes alert and focuses on assessor when approached. Starts to relax slightly when coaxed and will roll onto his back, but will tense up again when hand extends toward him and tries to lean away. Allows gentle strokes with a slow approach, but remains tense. Shows interest in food, but will only eat after interaction ends. 06/24/19 Lying in back of kennel, body relaxed and ears forward. Rolls over onto side and reaches out towards me with soft paws. Tenses up as kennel door opens and tolerates petting along head and body while tilting ears and turning head to watch the scratcher. Sniffs treats offered but pauses to look around the room with wide eyes – distracted and focused on environment at the moment. Unsure – needs more time to adjust. 06/25/19 Laying in the back of his kennel with his ears tilted and pupils dilated, andy will look around the kennel when opening his door. He remains tense when the assessor approaches him for petting, and will hiss once the scratcher touches him. He remains and continues to hiss while pet. Will try other enrichment tomorrow. 06/26/19 Lying in back of kennel, body low and tense. Tolerates petting along head and body initially while turning head to sniff my hand, then beginning to lean in gently. He rolls over onto his side with continued petting, body slightly tense as he pauses to look around the room. Sniffs tuna offered but doesn’t eat it during our interaction. Sweet and shy – beginning to warm up!

Reaction to assessor:: Andy is laying in the back of his kennel with a neutral face and body when approached, when noticing the assessor, he tenses up and makes eye contact with dilated pupils.

Reaction when softly spoken to:: Andy will continue to make eye contact.

Reaction to cage door opening:: Andy will huff and look around nervously.

Reaction to touch:: Andy will lean in and sniff the scracther while huffing. He will lean away when pet, or look around his kennel nervously for an exit. He will only lean in slightly when pet on his cheeks or under his chin.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Timid,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful

Potential challenges comments:: Andy has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Experienced, adult only

Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Andy may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. She may have some behavioral issues that will need to be addressed in the home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
