Animal Profile

Scorpio

Hello, my name is Scorpio. My animal id is #212389. I am a male fawn brindle dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 months 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 10/23/2024, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- landlord won't allow.

Scorpio is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. While he has become more social with staff, he is struggling to adjust to the shelter environment. Scorpio has exhibited signs of social hyper arousal, leading to poor bite inhibition and gripping onto the handlers hands with hard pressure unable to settle. Medically, he appears to be healthy.

This pet needs emergency placement. Please click here to go to our emergency placement page for more information. A volunteer writes: Scorpio's previous family describe him as very social and affectionate, and loves to be with people. And that pretty much sums him up perfectly! We'd only just met but already he was wiggling and waggling into me as soon as I began petting him. He especially loved getting back scratches and chin-rubs, even stretching his neck up as far as he could, making sure I didn't miss a spot. And during his photoshoot with another volunteer, he showed us what a big lap-dog he is. Clambering all 61 pounds of himself up onto her lap, he stood there for a minute, balancing himself on her legs like a billy goat, before deciding to sit down for a while - right in her lap! Scorpio's other favorite things are belly-rubs, toys, and playing with balls. This big puppy, not surprisingly, has a high energy level, so he'll need daily exercise. He'd also greatly benefit from additional training; but he's young, highly social, treat-motivated, eager learn, and already knows the cues for sit, come, up, and down. I think you'll quickly fall in love with Scorpio....and he thinks so, too! So come and meet him today at our Queens Shelter.

My medical notes are...

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13)- Due to Scorpio Potential behavior challenges we recommend he is placed in an adult only home at this time.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Social hyperarousal,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Anxiety,Leash-biting

Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding- During the handling assessment Scorpio hovered of the assessor toy pawing and body blocks.It is essential to work on desensitizing her to having her possessions handled by using techniques like trading up for higher-value items and practicing "drop it" and "leave it". Please see handout on Resource guarding. Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition/Basic manners/poor impulse control/Social hyperarousal- in dogs is a state of heightened excitement and alertness triggered by social interactions or environmental stimuli, leading to behaviors like excessive barking, restlessness, jumping, mouthing, and pacing. Managing this condition involves consistent training with positive reinforcement, maintaining a structured routine, minimizing exposure to triggers, ensuring ample physical exercise, and providing mental stimulation through puzzle toys and interactive games. For severe cases, consulting a veterinary behaviorist or professional dog trainer is recommended. Please see the handout on Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition/Basic manners/poor impulse control/Social hyperarousal Anxiety- Scorpio displayed pacing panting behavior in the care center. Providing a calm, low-stimulation environment, both in and out of the kennel, will help minimize his stress. Mental and physical enrichment activities, such as puzzle toys and regular exercise, can redirect his anxious energy. Establishing a consistent daily routine will also provide structure and predictability, which can further alleviate anxiety. Please see the handout on Generalized anxiety. Leash-Biting- It is reported that Scorpio will leash bite when going back into his kennel.
