He begins to bark and bounce up and down in a frantic manner as the door is unlocked. He attempts to push out of as handler braces the door. He is leashed and removed from the kennel. As he exits he lunges towards the dogs in the crate and hard barks, handler has to use a lot of muscle and a very short leash to pull him away. He continues displaying the same behavior until he reaches the yard. He relieves himself in the yard and paces around the pen, remaining frantic. Handler keeps him on a leash and cues a sit, he complies and is given a high value treat. As handler returns him to kennel, his movements become erratic and intense, mildly thrashing, pulling and darting in all directions, his body tense, and is hard barking and lunging towards the dogs. He relieves himself and the second handler goes to pick it up. As the handler walks to the garbage Mike turns around and pulls hard towards the second handler and stares at them with a tense body. He is kept away and walked around the perimeter of the yard. He ignores people passing the fence and is walked back into the shelter. A dog passes in front of him and he begins pulling forward and hard barking. He hard barks towards the passing pop up crates before he is placed in the kennel. As the leash is removed he begins to hover over a toy with a tense body. The leash is removed and as the kennel is locked, Mike jumps up and paws at the door whimpering and barking repeatedly. Potential challenges: : Destructive behavior,Separation anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Strength/leash pulling
Potential challenges comments:: Destructive Behavior: Mike's previous owner states that he has destructive tendencies in the home. We are unaware of what, if any, attempts were made to remedy this behavior but we suggest to future adopters that Mike will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys so they can engage in necessary chewing behavior without damage to human objects. Please see handout on Destructive Behavior. Separation Anxiety: Mike's previous owner states that he will become anxious when left alone. We recommend that potential adopters feel comfortable with separation anxiety behaviors and be prepared to manage and positively modify them should they appear in a home environment. They would do best in a home where a person is home for a large part of the day or with a plan so they are not alone for long periods of time. Please see handout on Separation Anxiety. On Leash Reactivity/ Leash Pulling: Mike's previous owner states that he hard bark towards cats, dogs, and strangers while on leash. During his stay in the care center Mike has been obsvered to be highly on leash reactive. This behavior is not able to be redirected. Mike will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than dogs and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
