Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

Sesshomaru is on the emergency placement list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to their stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Behavior Condition: 1. Green

Upon intake, Sesshomaru arrived in a carrier with the front covered in duct tape. When staff removed the tape, he pressed his nose to their hand but would not exit on his own even when food was placed just outside of the carrier. He allowed staff to collar, photograph, scan and gently pet his head which he leaned into. Staff was able to remove him from the carrier and place him into a care center carrier before he was taken to Vet Services.

Basic Information:: Sesshomaru is an approximately 7 year old, male, white and black domestic shorthair who was found as a stray and surrendered to the care center by his finders. His history is unknown.

Previously lived with:: 1 other cat

KNOWN HISTORY:: Sesshomaru was brought in as a stray, there is no known information on his behavior history in a home environment Upon intake, Sesshomaru arrived in a carrier with the front covered in duct tape. When staff removed the tape, he pressed his nose to their hand but would not exit on his own even when food was placed just outside of the carrier. ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 10/23/22 Hunched in back of kennel, body and face tense with tail curled around feet. He makes eye contact with dilated pupils when spoken to, then watches me as I gently place treats in front of him. He remains focused on me and I am surprised that when I attempt petting he leans in abruptly, arching his shoulders and standing up as his face softens. He allows further petting while leaning in and pausing to look around the room. He only begins eating treats after I begin petting him. Very sweet - needs help building confidence. Can be re-evaluated soon! 10/26/22 Hiding in cat den today, completely hidden from view. He hisses when I drop some treats in his den through the peepholes so I don't push any hands-on interaction at this time. I speak to him softly and leave some scent enrichment before ending the session. He may have reacted in this way because I was hidden from his line of sight for the duration of our interaction. 10/27/22 Sitting in the front of the cage with ears forward, face and body tense, and limbs tucked under him. He hisses at me but then eats squeeze up and I work on clicker training for eat the squeeze up initially and then for pets. He is tolerant of pets with the tool and with my hand and arches up into the pets but gets fed up and starts to low growl. I leave him some treats and end the interaction. 10/29/22 Hiding in den and has no interest in interacting today. I offer him squeeze up on the scratcher tool and he shows no interest before he begins to low growl and swats the tool hard. I toss a couple treats in the cage and end the interaction. 10/31/22 Hiding in cat den upon approach, part of his leggies and feet visible through the den door. I am unable to coax him out today using scent enrichment, treats or sweet talk. Will perhaps try turning his den around soon, for easier exposure and maybe easier socialization. 11/02/22 Laying in cat den initially, body neutral, eyes slightly widened and ears forward. He sniffs the treat that’s placed in front of him and eats it, and I am able to coax him out half-way with more treaties (clicking and rewarding with each step he takes forward). Eventually he walks to the other side of his kennel! I do not push petting today because I wasn’t out end the session on a positive note, but he’s definitely beginning to feel more curious and brave. 11/4/22 In den but pokes face out to lick squeeze up off of scratcher tool and I clicker train for engaging with it. He also takes a few pieces of chicken from my hand with ears forward and a neutral face but pulls it back into his den to eat. 11/06/22 Hiding in cat den upon approach, completely hidden from view. I am unable to coax him out with treats or sweet talk today. His appetite may be reduced at this time due to a URI diagnosis.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Independent,Timid

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful

Potential challenges comments:: Please see behavior flyer for more information.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Sesshomaru was lying in the back of his kennel as the assessor approached, body and face tense with tail wrapped tightly around feet. Sesshomaru made eye contact with a tense expression when spoken to, then looked around the room with his eyes as his face and body remained frozen as the kennel door opened. Sesshomaru tolerated petting along his head and back while turning slightly to watch the scratcher, remaining still and beginning to tilt his ears. Pick up was not attempted at this time to reduce stress. Sesshomaru was displaying similar signs of FAS during his re-assessment. Sesshomaru was hiding in his cat den upon approach, and when petting was attempted in from within his den with the assessor's hand Sesshomaru tolerated the touch while leaning away, tensing further and beginning to growl. Sesshomaru tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
