Animal Profile

Twistyfig

Hello, my name is Twistyfig. My animal id is #239536. I am a male black cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 10/18/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- hoarding situation.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Twistyfig is on the At Risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and is deteriorating in the Adoptions room. He is now displaying signs of boredom and frustration. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I have lived with cats in my previous home. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. Twistyfig is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat is extremely stressed in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time. A volunteer writes: Twistyfig came to the Care Center ready to make the most of it, happily accepting and leaning into pets as he greeted us with his friendly and open heart. Maybe shelter life didn't turn out to be what Twistyfig expected, or maybe it's just really, really hard. Whatever combination of factors it was, Twistyfig's approach to shelter life has changed considerably. He still wants to engage with us, albeit differently and with a couple of caveats. Mostly Twistyfig wants everything to go his way and honestly, I completely get it. He actually waits for his way to happen sitting on top of his little cubby with bright eyes and outstretched paws and when it inevitably doesn't, Twistyfig quickly asks for some space. We can understand that shelter life is quite a shift since Twistyfig came to us from a home with many other cats and maybe hasn't had as many opportunities to meet new people as other cats have had. We know that a second chance with a patient and loving forever family who wants to learn about his way will be just the right fit for this very special guy.

Behavior Condition: 2. Blue

KNOWN HISTORY:: Twistyfig was brought in with limited information on his behavior history in a home environment. Lived in a home with 30+ other cats.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: PRIOR ASSESSMENT on 10/21/25: Twistyfig is laying curled up at the front of his kennel, body relaxed, picking up his head and turning to look at the assessor upon approach. He allows all petting and leans into pets on his head, cheeks, and shoulders. He is able to be picked up, slightly tense when he is held but without any further issue. PRIOR ASSESSMENT 11/4/25 Twistyfig was resting on top of the den, alert with neutral eyes. He meowed softly and appeared interested in attention but quickly struck through the kennel bars when contact was attempted. The assessment was ended early to reduce stress. He cautiously accepted and ate offered treats. 10/26/25 FB32 When attempting to transfer into a carrier to potentially attend an adoption event, he flattens his ears, harshly hisses, and swats the space in front of him in defense. 10/27/25 FB73 Observed ACS staff attempting to clean his kennel, he is laying in his den and hisses, low growls, and hard swats through the portal exit at staff member's hands when they attempt to clean. 10/29/25 FB32 Lying down resting curled up on top of the den, perks up when spoken to and opening the door. Leans forward to sniff and accept treats offered. Sits up and leans back when pet on the head and cheeks. 10/31/25 FB73 Twistyfig is laying on top of his den, drooling and tooth chattering. As kennel door is opened, pupils dilate and ears go slightly back. Allows brief petting on the head with the tool before backing up and lifting a paw. Handler gives him a few moments and then attempts to offer squeeze up. He leans forward to sniff at it before freezing, hard swatting and hissing at the tool. Interaction is ended to reduce FAS. 11/1/25 FB47 Twistyfig is showing normal behavior and mentation. 11/6/25 Stress meows upon approach. Hisses and strikes at the scratcher tool when attempting to make contact. He ate offered treats but remains highly cautious, anxiously scanning the room quickly striking through the kennel bars.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Shy ,Curious,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: New home adjustment period,Adult cat socialization

Potential challenges comments:: Twistyfig is an adult cat that may not have had many interactions with humans from an early age. He attempts to flee and avoid human contact and will escalate to swatting. It is difficult to predict if he will respond to socialization, but we recommend offering high value treats and food to help build a positive association to humans. Please be mindful that older cats will require more time and skill in order for them to be comfortable around people. Please speak to an adoption counselor to learn more about socialization techniques.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Due to behavior observed in shelter, adult only home.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Twistyfig is at the front of the kennel, pupils dilated and meowing at the assessor as they approach his kennel. The assessor offers him crunchy treats through the kennel bars, and he sniffs at them before beginning to eat them. He continues to meow at the assessor once finished eating, eyes wide and body tense. Petting is attempted with the scratcher tool, and he repeatedly swats at it hard and with claws, hissing, and running into his den to avoid further interaction. Twistyfig is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
