Bite history:: none

Energy level/descriptors:: Medium

KNOWN HISTORY:: Mabel was brought into our care center as a stray so we have no previous history available.

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: 08/10/19 Observed Behavior -Very nervous and tense, ears back, pupils dilated, hissing, growling, and swatting in kennel. Netted for exam.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 08/13/19 Pressed against her back kennel wall, she will avoid most eye contact when spoken to, but will focus on the assessor as her kennel door is opening. Her body tenses up and she will retreat before the assessor is able to pet her with the scratcher. She does this twice, and was then baited with chicken, but showed no interest. Was left alone due to stress. 08/14/19 Crouched in back of kennel, face and body tense. Steps forward to sniff treat offered, then gobbles it up. Loves whole hearted treats - I click and reward each time she approaches the front. Will continue to clicker train! 8/18/19 Siting upright by the back, looks at assessor with almond-shaped eyes when coaxed. Leans away when petting is attempted, but likes treats so rewarded each time I was able to pet her on the head or if she sniffed my hand. Did fairly well, though still tense with touch.

Reaction to assessor:: Mabel is crouched in the back of her kennel as the assessor approaches, ears flat and tail wrapped tightly around body.

Reaction when softly spoken to:: Mabel makes and maintains eye contact when spoken to.

Reaction to cage door opening:: Mabel lowers her body and looks around the room as the kennel door opens.

Reaction to touch:: Mabel tolerates petting along her head and body with the asssesor’s hand while leaning away from the assessor and squinting her eyes shut. She darts forward in an attempt to avoid further contact, ears flat and tail and body low.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Skittish,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful

Potential challenges comments:: Mabel has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and may dislike certain types of handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
