Animal Profile

Arrow

Hello, my name is Arrow. My animal id is #242056. I am a male brown dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 6 years 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 11/19/2025.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Arrow is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Arrow has displayed a concerning level of reactivity towards other dogs, both on leash and during an attempt at a playgroup interaction with another dog. He screeches, lunges, barks, fixates, and intermittently leash bites or thrashes on the lead as a result. While Arrow has shown social behaviors with staff and handlers, he has redirected onto a staff member twice during a walk, but did not make contact. Medically, Arrow has dental disease and is being treated for CIRDC.

Arrow was surrendered into care as a stray, so his past behavior in a home environment is unknown. Arrow has not acclimated well to the shelter environment, displaying an intense level of reactivity to other dogs both on leash and during an off-leash interaction for playgroup, but has shown sociability with handlers, maintaining a loose body, leaning into petting, and readily engages in enrichment games. During a walk, Arrow attempted to redirect onto a staff member twice after reacting to another dog that he had seen during his walk. Due to these concerns, we recommend that Arrow to be placed in an adult-only home where he can be the only dog through a New Hope rescue partner that can address these challenges with the use of positive reinforcement-only methods. What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets.

Summary:: Arrow was surrendered as a stray, so his past behavior with other dogs is unknown. 11/26/25 Arrow immediately fixates and alternates between screeching and hard barking at a novel dog that enters the adjacent pen. Arrow races back and forth, with his hackles raised, stiff bodied, and high, stiff tail. The novel dog immediately flees, and Arrow remains fixated, tracking the movements. A handler picks up his drag leash to walk him to a further corner away from the gate while offering him treats to redirect him. He quickly head whips towards the handler's thigh, mouth open, but he immediately returns to fixating on the other dog. A second handler enters the pen to leash Arrow, and he whips around on the second handler with his mouth open as well. Arrow is immediately returned to his kennel.

Summary (6):: 12/4/25: Arrow is jumping and barking at the front of his kennel with heavy panting and red widened eyes as handler approaches. He continues to jump up at the door while barking as the handler attempts to leash him. Once leashed, he pulls hard with heavy panting on the way to the behavior room. In the room, he would jump up on the handlers and pace around with heavy panting and widened eyes. He is able to settle while engaging in a snuffle mat, a cheese lick mat, and spray cheese that was sprayed on the couch. He pulls hard on the way back to his kennel and jumps and barks at the door as the handler locks it and walks away.

Summary (7):: 12/03 Arrow is standing on his kennel door with a loose frame vocalizing at the handler as they approach. The handler will drape the loop of their leash onto him as he is standing on his hind legs and is taken to the live room. He exits the kennel room exuberantly, pulling on leash while panting heavily. Arrow will enter the live room and engage with a snuffle matt waiting for him. The handler will place a drag leash onto him and allow him to engage with the snuffle matt and lick matt. The handler will parodically place more spray cheese on the lick matt and more treats in the snuffle. This keeps arrows occupied throughout his time in the live room. He allows petting but begins to become aroused, displaying exaggerated movements and bouncing around the room hastily. The handler will pick up the drag leash and keep him on leash for the remainder of the time. He allows the handler to releash him with their leash remaining still while engaging with treats on the ground. He is returned to kennel with no issue as he pulls his way back over to the kennel room. 12/01/25: As the handler is outside with Arrow on a walk Arrow starts barking and lunging at another dog. Arrow starts to then redirect onto the handler but the handler is able to stiff arm Arrow before contact was made. The handler is able to bring Arrow back into his kennel and starts biting the handlers rope before the rope was removed. 11/28/25 (Trainer Note): Arrow is jumping on the door of the kennel with a loose body and moderate pant as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and pulls moderately to the canine training room. Arrow is loose and social with staff, leaning into contact. The handler works with him on the 123 game and take a breath and he participates readily, though he has to be lured into taking deep breaths. Arrow is easily leashed and returned to kennel without issue. 11/26/25(PG Note): Arrow is brought into the play yard for a dog to dog introduction and immediately becomes reactive toward the female playmate tracking her, hard barking, and maintaining a stiff body with a tight muzzle. Due to this behavior, the interaction is cut short. Upon leaving the play yard, Arrow head whips. While being escorted back inside the building and into his kennel, he begins biting the leash and pulling it downward, placing his front paws on the leash while standing on his hind legs. Arrow is redirected with a stiff arm and eventually returned to his kennel safely without any further issues. Before this, the ACS that brought Arrow to the play yard after his walk stated that he was lunging and screeching at another dog he saw.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): We recommend Arrow be placed in an adult-only home at this time. Single-pet home/no dog parks: Due to the concerning level of reactivity observed during his stay in care, we recommend that Arrow be the only dog in the home and that he not attend dog parks at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: Arrow has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has displayed a concerning level of reactivity, which has resulted in him redirecting onto a handler twice. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners / Poor Impulse Control: Arrow demonstrates poor impulse control, frequently jumping up during interactions. This behavior suggests a need for structured training to reinforce calm greetings and teach alternative behaviors such as sitting for attention. Please see the handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. Mouthiness / Poor Bite Inhibition: Arrow becomes mouthy during handling and play, indicating limited bite inhibition. This behavior should be addressed through consistent redirection to appropriate chew items and reinforcing gentle interactions to prevent escalation. Please see the handout on Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition. Handling/touch sensitivity/Fearful:Upon intake the dog was friendly with a loose body and social with staff. Staff were able to pet, scan for m/c, place slip leash, and remove harness. Once staff placed the slip leash the dog began to lightly thrash. While walking back to medical, the dog continued to thrash, escalating from thrashing his head to his whole body. While waiting for vaccines, the dog would spin, whine, pant, and thrash. When entering the kennel the dog spun, thrashed, and attempted to climb the kennel door Arrow is noted to resists restraint, started to thrash during his medical exam. Please see the handout on the decompression period and Handling/touch sensitivity. Anxiety: Arrow exhibits signs of anxiety, including pacing and open-mouth panting, particularly in stressful or unfamiliar environments. These behaviors indicate a need for gradual desensitization and calming strategies to reduce stress. Please see the handout on generalized anxiety. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Arrow lunges, fixates, and screeches at other dogs during walks. He is unable to settle or recover and can be slow to redirect with treats. Please see the handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration.
