Animal Profile

Nermo

Hello, my name is Nermo. My animal id is #43539. I am a desexed male black cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 7 years 10 months old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 7/12/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person health - medical.

Nermo is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He will hiss and at time lunge in his den due to his high FAS, and he has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. At times if her is given a quiet moment to sit with the behavior staff and settle down, he will return some slow blinks and may accept some cheek pets with a scratcher tool (remaining tense). Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible to allow him to decompress. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I am finding the shelter a little overwhelming, but when it's just you and me and some peace and quiet you'll see what a love bug I am. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. A volunteer writes: Nermo has been adored and admired, celebrated and loved, so being back at the shelter seems to have come as quite a shock. Initially found outside, he was most recently brought into the Care Center when his guardian could no longer care for him. All we want is to help him settle in but when I went to say hello, Nermo swiftly explained it wasn't a good time. Everyone can have a bad day, everyone can have a string of bad days even, but what we don't want is Nermo's not so good days to accumulate and turn into something he isn't. Nermo's notes beautifully and lovingly describe a bubbly and joyful cat who loves to play and be with those he loves. He could just use a little help right now and maybe that help will come from you?

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 7/17/25 FB58 Sitting near front of cubby with tense face and body, eyes wide and dilated and hisses as I approach. He lunges at the front of the cage with a ears tilted to the side as I move to open the cubby and backs away as the cubby door is opened. When the tool is offered, he swats and hissed, low growling throughout the interaction. I don't push for more and instead close the cage door and place a cover on the cubby. I add him to the gaba list as well. 7/20/25 Vol. Nermo was in the smaller compartment. When I lifted the kennel cover, he hissed and backed away. He hissed and spat each time he caught a glimpse of me. I tossed a toy and some Temptations towards him. He sniffed them, momentarily stopping his hissing. I opened the door to the smaller compartment and could hear him grumbling softly. I did not try to pet him because he seemed to be stressed. Later on, the medical staff had to take him away for an exam.  He needed to be netted and then sedated because he was agitated. He needs time to feel safe. 7/22/25 FB58 In his den and hisses when the cage cover is lifted - he is under the weather. He is continues to hiss but at times will slow blink. I don't push for interaction today to prevent negative associations. 7/25/25 FB79 Today, Nermo displayed the same behaviors as the previous enrichment note. Hissing/ low grumbling when approached with flat ears. 7/29/25 FB58 In den with a tense face and body, growls and hisses with eyes wide and ears tilted before he lunges at the front of his den. I sit and slow blink at him as he settles, he returns one and I offer the scratcher tool out slowly to him. He sniffs it and allows some slow cheek pets before he lunges again at the front of the den as someone walks behind me. I wait as he settles gain pressed at the back and loafed tightly. He returns slow blinks and accepts more cheek pets and chin scratches as he leans into the touch while low growling. By the end he appears less on edge but he requires a longer adjustment and slow approach. 7/30/25 FB61 In cat den upon approach, body and face tense with ears flat and head lowered. He hisses as I offer treats and a catnip toy. He is tolerant of touch but I do not push it due to his obvious signs of fear and stress. I speak to him softly, slow-blink and spray feliway before I end the session. Needs more time. 8/03/25 Vol Nermo hissed at me from inside his den when I moved the kennel cover aside. I tossed some treats into the den and spoke softly to him. I put my hand towards him, as he huddled behind the clear wall of the den. Each time he saw my hand getting closer, he hissed, spat and swatted at the wall. He grumbled a bit, then began to eat his Temptations. He needs time to settle down. He is also under the weather now. BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Nermo was lying in the back of his cubby as the assessor approached, body and face tense with his tail wrapped tightly around his body. Nermo flattened his ears when spoken to and he hissed at the assessor as the cubby door opened, pupils dilated. Nermo tolerated petting with the scratcher tool while whipping his head back and biting the air in warning, then flattening his ears further and beginning to grumble as the assessor continued to pet him with the scratcher tool. Pick up was not attempted at this time to reduce stress. Nermo tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
