Hello, my name is Chocolate. My animal id is #9704. I am a desexed male gray cat at the . The shelter thinks I am about 8 months 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 10/14/2017, with the surrender reason stated as animal behaviour - not good with kids.

Chocolate is at risk due to being diagnosed with an Upper Respiratory Infection which is contagious to other cats. Chocolate will likely require in home care with a course of antibiotics. Chocolate is a social cat (Average determination), but occasionally does become overstimulated with handling.

A volunteer writes: With flop-over ability destined for Olympic gold, and his rock star worthy belly flashes (can you say Flufosaurus?), there's no saying no to this delectable "cathlete!" And just for giggles, this little get-up-and-go guy will flip over on his back, take both back feet and push off his cat condo wall, just for some smooth afternoon sliding...there's not much this little nugget can't do! But at 8 months, he's still just a toddler, and out like a light, off to dreamland he went. So, set up the jungle gym, whip out those soft tumbling mats, and grab this delightful little dude. Batteries not included...or needed!

Hx: Tomorrow is last day of doxycycline for URI. Today, pt is purring, walking around kennel. No nasal or ocular discharge is noted. Okay to move out of isolation! 1088

Hx: Had URI but was cleared and had surgery. Today, pt is sniffling again! There is a large nasal planum ulceration, with moderate mucoid and bloody discharge. Pt is congested. Move back to isolation, restart doxycycline 0.7 ml PO SID x10 days, nebulizing BID as well as lysine 1 scoop once daily. 1088

Basic Information:: Chocolate is an 8 month old male cat that was surrendered because Client believed her 8 year old son was too hyperactive and the cat would constantly scratch him to get away. Client had Chocolate for almost 8 months and got him as a kitten from a local bodega.
Previously lived with:: Chocolate previously lived with two adults and two children.
How is this cat around strangers?: Chocolate is fearful around strangers and will hiss and growl.
How is this cat around children?: Chocolate is not good around children who have too much energy and are constantly touching him or picking him up. Chocolate did do well in his previous home with daughter who would carry him and have him on her lap. Client's daughter would handle him calmly and Chocolate enjoyed her company.
How is this cat around other cats?: Chocolate has never interacted with other cats and client is unsure of how he would react.
How is this cat around dogs?: Chocolate has never interacted with dogs and client is unsure of how he would react.
Behavior Notes: Client stated that Chocolate was always friendly and affectionate towards any female that would enter their house. However, when any male would come over, Chocolate would hiss and growl at them. Chocolate is not bothered when client gave him a bath as long as it was done calmly. Chocolate enjoys being picked up and held and will jump into his box carrier on his own. Client had Chocolate's nails trimmed at the vet and stated he was growling during the process.
Bite history:: Chocolate has not tried to bite any animal or human but has a history of scratching some humans.

If given the opportunity, Chocolate will walk out onto the fire escape but will not go out onto the street. Chocolate is litter box trained and uses an uncovered litter box with clumping litter.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 10/15/17 Resting at the front, soft posture, dilated eyes. Seems conflicted. Alternately hissing, yowling, and rubbing against the bars. Ate offered treats, reached gently through the bars, but yowled and nipped assess-a-hand when door opened. Needs time to acclimate. Sprayed feliway. 10/16/17 Calmer today, though still showing conflicting behavior. At the front on approach, dilated eyes, soft posture. Started rubbing against the bars, rolling all the way over, and purring audibly. Leaned into pets between the bars, but became extremely tense and alert when door opened. Hissed, grumbled, dug claws and teeth into assess-a-hand. Immediately resumed friendly and solicitous behavior after door closed. Sprayed feliway. 10/17/17 At the front on approach, soft eyes and body. Started rubbing against the bars, rolling over, and purring loudly when spoken to. Stayed at the front when door opened. Leaned and arched enthusiastically into pets, continued purring. Sat calmly when held.

Though we believe this cat is displaying behaviors appropriate for new or experienced cat parents, he may not be a great fit for young children. Any home with older children prepared to adopt this cat should conduct a thorough interaction and endeavor to monitor this cat around their children to prevent these behaviors from being reinforced.
