Coby

Hello, my name is Coby. My animal id is #75416. I am a male black dog at the . The shelter thinks I am about 15 years 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 9/10/2019, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- moving.

Reserved

Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

Coby was placed at risk due to behavioral concerns; Although he has shown improvement, Coby has been observed to rapidly escalate to threatening behavior when stressed or uncomfortable. As a result of these observations, we feel he would be best set up to succeed if placed with an experienced rescue partner who can help manage these behaviors and allow him to acclimate and decompress at his own pace, before reassessing his behavior in a more stable environment. Coby was diagnosed with Dermatitis and Fleas.

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Coby's observed fearful behavior with the potential for defensive aggression, we feel it would be best for him to be placed in a stable, adult-only home environment to ensure his success. Place with a New Hope partner: Although he has shown improvement, Coby has been observed to rapidly escalate to threatening behavior when stressed or uncomfortable. As a result of these observations, we feel he would be best set up to succeed if placed with an experienced rescue partner who can help manage these behaviors and allow him to acclimate and decompress at his own pace, before reassessing his behavior in a more stable environment. Force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing or exposing Coby to new and unfamiliar situations, as well as utilizing guidance from a qualified, professional trainer/behaviorist.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Although Coby displays social behavior, he exhibits fearful behavior when introduced or exposed to new situations, where he has been observed to remain tense and whale eye when uncomfortable. During his intake exam, Coby was observed to escalate to low growling and lunging toward staff members. He has also been observed to freeze and track staff members when initially approached. Coby has since acclimated to the care center, solicits attention and allows handling, but should never be forced to interact or approach if he is not comfortable. Positive association should be paired with anything Coby displays fear toward. Please refer to the handout for Decompression period, as well as the handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression.
