Animal Profile

Sycamore

Hello, my name is Sycamore. My animal id is #77741. I am a desexed male black cat at the . The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 10/3/2019.

Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

Sycamore is at risk for medical reasons. Sycamore was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection which is contagious to other animals and will require further care. Behaviorally, Sycamore has been fearful at the care center and will need a slow approached when being introduced to new environments.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

A volunteer writes: Sycamore is the sleeping beauty of the cat adoption room. He's a champion napper with a chilled-out vibe and fur so clean and pristine, he couldn't possibly be anything but a well taken care of house cat who lost his way. This easygoing boy came to the Care Center at the beginning of the month, and the volunteers who've fallen hard for him want nothing more than for him to welcome trick or treaters with his forever family in the new home we know is out there. Curious yet independent and a lover of attention but not needy, Sycamore is ready to park himself on your couch now!

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 2. Blue

KNOWN HISTORY:: Sycamore was brought in as a stray, there is no known information on his behavior history in a home environment.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 10/7/19 Resting in the upper cubby. He hisses on approach. Doesn’t engage when coaxed with treats but sniffs the assessor’s hand and allows gentle petting. He then leans in for cheek rubs and rolls over onto his side for attention. Sweet kitty. Still getting adjusted to the center. 10/8/19 HIssed once while he remained resting in his cubby when approached by the the assessor. Slowly retreats when cubby door opened. He stiffens up but accepted pets. Slowly leans into the hand while he remains wary with his surroundings. 10/9/19 In his litter box. Becomes alert and makes eye contact with wide pupils. Doesn’t hiss at the assessor when opening the door and shows interest in squeeze up treat eating it in front of the assessor. He allowed petting as well. He treated to the upper cubby at the end of the interaction. Seems to get stressed with the high traffic due to his position. Maybe moving to another kennel? 10/10/19 Resting in the cubby, alert with soft eyes. Accepts pets on the head and body. After a few strokes he slowly head rubs the hand while he remains comfortable in place. 10/12/19 Improving. Resting in his litter box in the cubby, appears a little shy, a hint of lip licking but allows all petting squinting his eyes a bit but calm. I tried to coax him out with tuna which he liked, but not enough to leave the cubby. If he could be coaxed out of the cubby he might be ready to be picked up and re-assessed. 10/13/19 Crouched at the upper cubby. Retreats when opening the door. Doesn’t engage when coaxed with treats but allows gentle petting on the head, leaning in for cheek rubs. Might not be feeling too well today. Under the weather kitty. 10/14/19 Resting in the main kennel space. Doesn’t engage when coaxed with treats but accepts petting, leaning in for cheeks rubs and closing his eyes. Definitely seems less stress now that he is not sharing kennels with sibling. Still under the weather. 10/15/19 Resting in the cubby, alert with eyes slightly closed. Accepts petting, remains in place. Appreciates the attention and purrs in place while he enjoys offered treats. 10/17/19 Resting softly in the cubby when approached by the assessor. Head rubs and body leans into the hand. Purrs throughout the interaction and enjoys offered tuna. Sweet Boy! Remains comfortable in place. 10/21/19 Curled up inside hidey box and doesn't respond when coaxed. Hisses when hand extends toward him, not very open to interacting today. Tolerates gentle rubs but remains tense and immobile. Kept interaction short to limit stress.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Sweet,Timid

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: Sycamore should be given a slow introduction to the home, one room at a time starting in a small room like a bathroom with food, litter and water, either because of behaviors seen at the Care Center [hissing] suggest that he might hide if allowed. Interact with him in this room until he seems sufficiently confident that you feel you can introduce him to the next part of the home without running the risk that he will hide. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to help introduce your cat to the home.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: During his interaction, Sycamore was resting in his litter box. He hissed at the assessor when opening the cubby door and made eye contact with wide pupils (probably due to the high traffic coming in and out of the room). Sycamore didn't engage when coaxed with treats but sniffed the scratcher tool when extended and allowed gentle petting on the head. He leaned in for cheek rubs and rolled over onto his side for attention after a few strokes. Sycamore remained lip licking anxiously throughout the interaction. Sycamore tolerates attention and petting but appears stressed in the shelter. He may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
