Lace

Hello, my name is Lace. My animal id is #162999. I am a desexed male black dog at the . The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 7 months 1 weeks old.

Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

Lace is in need of emergency placement due to behavior concerns. In the care centers, Lace was observed to hard bark, snarl, and lunge at strangers and staff during walks. On one occasion, he bit a staff member when her arm, leaving a puncture and bruising. During cleaning, he will bite the kennel bars. Medically, Lace is apparently healthy.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

This pet needs emergency placement. Please click here to go to our emergency placement page for more information. Due to the detailed behavior issues, this animal is only available for foster/adoption through one of ACC's New Hope Partners. If you are interested in adopting or fostering, please fill out the pre-screener form. This animal is not directly available for adoption through ACC and is only available by completing the pre-screener form.Adoption inquiries sent directly to ACC will not receive a response. Pre-Screener Form Lace is in need of emergency placement due to behavior concerns. Lace was surrendered to BACC due to his owners no longer being able to care for him. He has been intensely fearful at the care center and has escalated to biting staff, with one bite on record-breaking skin. As a result, we recommend he be placed with an experienced, adult-only foster or adopter home through one of our New Hope partners where he can take the time and space he needs to decompress. A volunteer writes, "Lace was brought to our care center due to landlord issues. Upon arrival, Lace was very scared. He is only a year old and a high energy boy. His previous guardian said he was playful and respectful with other dogs. Lace is looking for an experienced home who will respect his body language, and give him space when he asks. His guardian told us he is friendly and outgoing normally with strangers and children. He is exuberant and respectful of other dogs. She told us that Lace has a lot of playful fun energy, but he is too scared right now to show us that side of him. In the yard, Lace takes a brief interest in a toy, but prefers to sit on the bench and watch everything. Even when he jumps off for a quick zoom around the yard, he hops right back up. We hope he feels safe on that bench and that being up there lets him relax a little bit. He is reported to be crate trained, well behaved when left alone."

ENERGY LEVEL:: His previous owners describe Lace as a high-energy dog. In the care center he has been active and enthusiastic. He may have a low threshold for arousal and needs guidance to learn how to appropriately channel that energy when he becomes overstimulated. He will need daily mental and physical stimulation and exercise, and force-free, positive reinforcement-based training may help him to learn impulse control and to train desirable behaviors that can be rewarded.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: NO CHILDREN: Due to Lace's fearfulness we recommend an adult-only home. NEW HOPE ONLY: Due to Lace's fearfulness and bite history, we recommend he be placed in an experienced, adult-only foster home through one of our New Hope partners.

Potential challenges: : House soiling,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Bite history (human)

Potential challenges comments:: HOUSE SOILING: Lace has been reported to be not fully house trained. He will need consistency and force-free, reward-based training to learn the appropriate behavior. FEARFUL/ POTENTIAL FOR DEFENSIVE AGGRESSION: Lace gives clear warnings when he is uncomfortable and does seem to choose to avoid or retreat when given the opportunity, but if prevented from moving away there is a potential to escalate to higher-level warning behaviors and possible fear-based aggression. It is important to move slowly with Lace, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow Lace to initiate interactions with new people. He should never be forced to greet or to interact if he is not comfortable and soliciting attention. Lace would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. See handouts on Decompression Period and Fearful and Defensive Aggression. BITE HISTORY (HUMAN): Lace has one bite on record while in care. When a member of care staff pointed, Lace jumped up and bit their arm, tearing their hoodie and leaving one puncture. Please see handout on Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression.
