Animal Profile

Ivory

Hello, my name is Ivory. My animal id is #30721. I am a desexed male white dog at the . The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 3 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 9/16/2018, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- no time for animal.

Reserved

Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

Ivory is at risk for behavior concerns, he is very fearful at the care center. While he has warmed up to select handlers and displayed social behavior, he remains very fearful with quick movements and of new people. We recommend placement with a new hope partner. There are no medical concerns for Ivory at this time.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

A volunteer writes: It was a very special afternoon, the time I spent in the company of Ivory. He is a gorgeous boy, with Paul Newman peepers, and paper white except for a long black Morse code dash marking his tail. He's had a small social circle, so he is choosy about revealing himself. I witnessed him go from reserved, and watchful, to bouncy play with a favorite handler. That dog is within, awaiting discovery. As for my interaction, I was rewarded with paws-on-my-shoulders cuddling. He handles easily on leash and is house trained, but not a marker. Ivory loves the company of dogs (me, too!) and noticeably softens in their presence. And also lived with a cat. A patient, slow style will win this dog's heart and mind. Come to the ACC and ask for Ivory.

My medical notes are...

Summary:: Ivory is very fearful at the care center. While he has warmed up to handlers and displayed social behavior, he remains very fearful with quick movements and of new people. Date of intake:: 9/16/2018

Summary:: Barking and lunging when approached

ENERGY LEVEL:: Ivory is described as having a high level of activity. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.

IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: Ivory warms up significantly to handlers when given time to approach and acclimate. Initially he will maintain tucked tail and sniff handlers from a distance, but after warming up will solicit attention, sit in the laps of handlers, and engages in play. He will follow select handlers when they walk away, seeking comfort when he is uncomfortable.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY

Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable

Recommendations:: Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: Place with a New Hope partner: Due to all noted concerns displayed in a home environment, the behavior department recommends Ivory be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Ivory to acclimate comfortably to his new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Ivory to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Ivory presents with outside of the care centers.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Ivory gives clear warnings when he is uncomfortable (barking, growling, moving away) and does seem to choose to avoid or retreat when given the opportunity, but if prevented from moving away there is a potential to escalate to higher-level warning behaviors and possible fear-based aggression. It is important to move slowly with Ivory, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow Ivory to initiate interactions with new people. He should never be forced to greet or to interact if he is not comfortable and soliciting attention. Anxiety: Ivory's previous owner described him as an anxious dog. If Ivory displays anxious behavior in his future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving him other things to focus on to alleviate his anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used.
