Animal Profile

Brady

Hello, my name is Brady. My animal id is #228350. I am a male black cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 5/31/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- hoarding situation.

Brady is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

What my friends at ACC say about me: I have lived with cats in my previous home. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I'll need daily interaction with you as I get used to my new life. A volunteer writes: Brady really is doing his best. He's mostly keeping to himself, working up the courage to accept treats and scratches, and even seems to react positively to sweet talk and slow blinks. But this young bear cub of a cat is having a hard time at the Care Center, as he was brought to us from a home with several other cats and may not have a lot of experience making human friends. We don't know if he's a naturally shy guy or if he's simply fearful because he's in an unfamiliar environment. We do know that boys like Brady tend to relax and open up once they're in a new home with pet parents who allow them to decompress, feel secure, and blossom. Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 2. Blue

KNOWN HISTORY:: Brady was brought in with limited information on his behavior history in a home environment.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 6/10/25 Vol. Hiding in his privacy den. Hissed when I tried to give him Squeeze-ups, and hissed at the cat dancer and laser. Stopped interaction to avoid FAS. Never came out of his den. 6/11/25 Vol. Brady was lying curled up inside den, with one front leg stretched out in front of him. His eyes were wide and partly dilated. He did not react when offered treats on scratcher tool. After a few moments, he pulled his head back inside den, away from the opening. 6/13/25 Vol. In main cage, head resting on paws - he tensed up and eyes widened when put in treat bowl but otherwise no movement. Approached with hard treats on tool, still tense, no reaction. Dropped treats and Brady allowed scratches with tool, no movement or reaction. After many scratches, Brady rearranged himself into a meatloaf and gave a few blinks while still allowing head scratches with tool. Gave plenty of scratches, he would blink while scratching and eyes remain open when stopped. Gave more scratches, head started to drop and eyes started to close. Gave a few more and ended interaction. 6/14/25 Vol. In back of cubby in hunched position facing forward. Tense body when offered dry treats on scratcher tool. Ignored.  Left them in front of him. Slightly backed up. Offered squeeze up on scratcher tool.  Ignored. Licking lips 6/17/25 Vol. Seemed to be under the weather which was indicated on the white board; his eyes were very teary. He was sitting in loaf position in back of his kennel and gave me some slow blinks. Had no interest in Squeeze-up or playing with any toys. He never moved from his spot. 6/18/25 Vol. Brady was crouched in cubby eating wet food. He returned slow blinks when approached. He sniffed squeeze up on scratcher tool, but did not eat, then pressed himself into back of cubby with a tense body. He tolerated brief petting on his head and chin, remaining in place and lip licking once. 6/20/25 Vol. Watching from top cubby, eyes and ears normal. When approached cage, he backed up into crouch, ears a little sideways. No reaction to treat bowl by cubby entry. Opened cubby and approached with hard treats on scratcher tool - he pulled further back. Dropped treats and Brady allowed some head scratches with tool, uncomfortable, lip licking before slipping onto shelf - staying by cubby entry. He looked carefully in and then stretched neck out to eat the hard treats. Put more in - he slowly stretched to eat again. Put some treats closer to front of cubby and after alot of treats, Brady came close enough to allow me to touch his head with my hand. He ate treats, went to back of cubby and sat for a moment to look at my hand before slipping back onto shelf. Sweet talked, dropped some more hard treats and ended interaction

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Skittish,Independent

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Brady has deteriorated since his last assessment and is currently hissing and posturing as if to swat. Brady was resting in his den when approached. After the den cover was lifted, he slowly retreated and stiffened, appearing anxious and alert. He allowed petting with a scratcher tool through the side portal but remained immobile with wide eyes, scanning the room. The assessment was ended to minimize his stress. Brady tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
