Avery is on emergency placement for behavioral reasons. She has displayed high levels of reactivity toward other dogs in the care center, in one instance biting a staff member in the midst of reacting toward other dogs' kennels. The bite didn't break the skin but left bruising. She otherwise remains social with her handlers. Medically, Avery is apparently healthy.

She otherwise remains social with her handlers when not in the presence of other dogs in the shelter, however has become a concern for being to safely handle her. Medically, Avery currently has CIRDC with high concerns pneumonia is present.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

This pet needs emergency placement. Please click here to go to our emergency placement page for more information. Avery is on emergency placement for behavioral reasons. She has displayed high levels of reactivity towards other dogs in the care center, in one instance previously biting a staff member in the midst of reacting toward other dogs' kennels. Avery continues to display reactivity and frustration toward neighboring dogs and will spin and snap toward handlers. She otherwise remains social with her handlers when not in the presence of other dogs in the shelter. Medically, Avery is now healthy. Avery arrived at the care center as a stray with no known history. Throughout her stay in the care center, she has appeared highly social with all handlers met and at times may express excitement through the means of jumping up and play-mouthing. Though she remains social, she has begun to display some challenges with reactivity to other dogs and will often lunge toward them and hard bark. While being walked by a handler in the care center, Avery began to lunge and hard bark toward other kennels, at one point biting the staff member on the thigh in the midst of reactivity (resulting in bruising). It is not known with certainty if this bite may have been accidental or the result of redirected frustration and reactivity. She has recently been observed to continue to redirect frustration toward handlers, turning and snapping in one instance when being taken out of a room with many neighboring dogs. At this time, she may benefit most from leaving the care center and should be placed in an experienced, adult-only home as the only resident dog.

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 2. Blue

Avery was very friendly. A bit dog reactive but nothing too concerning. Very curious and alert. Accepted treats, collaring and leashing. Easy walk to kennel.

Date of intake:: 4/30/2022

Spay/Neuter status:: No

Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray

Bite history:: In the shelter, Avery was being walked past a row of kennels and began to lunge and snap toward them. She bit the handler on the leg as they were walking out the room with Avery and it is unclear if this bite was a result of a redirection.

Date of assessment:: 5/1/2022

Summary:: Leash Walking Strength and pulling: Moderate Reactivity to humans: None Reactivity to dogs: None Leash walking comments: None Sociability Loose in room (15-20 seconds): Highly social Call over: Approaches readily Sociability comments: Body soft, stays by assessor, mouths with light pressure Soft handling: Accepts contact Exuberant handling: Accepts contact Comments: Soft body, stands still Arousal Jog: Engages in play (exuberant) Arousal comments: Jumps up Knock: Approaches (exuberant) Knock comments: Jumps up Toy: Grips, takes away Toy comments: Body soft

Summary:: 5/1/22: Avery approaches a novel dog a bit tense at first, she then softens and wags her tail.

Summary (3):: 6/10/22: Avery is laying in her kennel and sits up allowing the handler to place a leash on her. She pulls hard, sometimes walking on her back legs only. In the yard, she sits for treats and allows handler to clip a drag leash on her collar. She remains near handlers, allowing petting. When jumping up on handler, Avery will mouth handlers hands. Treats are used to releash her. She returns to kennel without issue. 6/10/22: Avery is jumping up in kennel when approached. Handler is able to leash her with treats, a second leash is placed over her for safety reasons. She is then taken out where she begins to jump up on handlers and mouthing with light pressure. Once outside, she explores her surroundings and handler tries to clip a drag leash when Avery then flips her head and begins to jump up a little. She continues to jump up on handlers and in one instance, nips and grabs at handler's PPE gown. Afterwards, she sniffs arounds and lunges at the pigeons. She is brought back inside without issue. 6/9/22: It was reported by a staff member who was walking Avery that she began to spin around and snap toward them as she was being walked out the kennel room and into the hallway. Avery had previously been barking toward other dogs passing her kennel before being taken out. 6/4/22: While standing in the hallway with familiar handlers, Avery stiffens and her ears go back when an unfamiliar handler comes down the hallway. She then barks and she is pulled away. 6/1/22: Avery is in the hallway with another handler when she sees another familiar handler. She begins to play bow and wag her tail with a soft body. She tries to go up to handler and takes treats gently. Treats are tossed so she follows the other handler. 5/7/22: Avery is at the front of the kennel with a loose and wiggly body. She is easily leashed and taken outside where she relieves herself. She jumps up on handler socially and licks their arms and hands. She is brought back inside without issue. 5/6/22: Avery is at the front of the kennel with a loose and wiggly body. She is easily leashed and taken out where she relieves herself and jumps up on handlers in a social manner. She is brought back to her kennel without issue.

Summary (4):: 5/3/22: Avery is at the front of the kennel with a loose and wiggly body. She is easily leashed and taken to the yard. Once in the yard she relieves herself. Avery explores the yard and notices a dog in the next pen. Avery stiffens and then begins to lunge and hard bark at the dog. She is moved away and taken back to her kennel. 5/1/22: Staff member reported that when taking Avery out of the kennel she was lunging and barking towards other dog's kennels. Avery then bit the staff member on the thigh, biting and releasing and continuing to react to the dogs. The bite did not break skin but did result in significant bruising.

Date of intake:: 4/30/2022

Summary:: Social, reactive to dogs

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Avery so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to jumpy and mouthy behavior seen as the care center, we recommend a home without children. Single pet home/no dog parks: Due to the level of reactivity displayed toward dogs, we recommend a home with no other dogs. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to Avery displaying high levels of reactivity toward dogs with the potential to redirect, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Potential challenges: : Bite history (human),Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control: Avery jumps up a lot in a social manner. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: Avery has shown some mouthiness at the care center, applying light pressure. Please see handout on Mouthiness. Bite history: Avery bit a handler during in instance of reactivity toward other dogs' kennels in-shelter, but should still be managed carefully outside of a kennel environment. See handout on Bite History. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: At the care center, Avery has been observed to lunge and bark at dogs. In shelter, she has been observed to redirect frustration toward other dogs' kennels by snapping toward her handlers. It is unknown how this reactivity may translate outside of the care center. It is recommended that Avery be muzzled for street walks in areas where other dogs may be present. Please see handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration.
