Animal Profile

Tuffy

Hello, my name is Tuffy . My animal id is #88139. I am a desexed male tan dog at the . The shelter thinks I am about 14 years 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 2/8/2020.

Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

Tuffy is at risk for behavioral and medical reasons. Tuffy is a geriatric dog who was brought into our care after his owner unfortunately passed away. While in our care, Tuffy hasn't allowed for much interaction, and has shown sensitivities to touch and handling. Tuffy does appear to be treat motivated though, which may be useful with his behavior modification. Medically, Tuffy has several underlying conditions including a heart murmur, osteoarthritis and blindness which will need special care. Ideally, Tuffy should go into hospice where his care taker can provide palliative care and monitor his health day by day. Tuffy would be best suited for placement with a new hope partner that can address both his behavioral and medical concerns.

My medical notes are...

Summary:: Snapped when examining face, sedated for exam

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Tuffy so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. At the care center, he displays a low-medium level of activity.

IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: Tuffy mostly keeps to himself while on leash. When attempting to place a collar on Tuffy, he backs away. After a few attempts, he snaps. While on leash, Tuffy mostly walks around and keeps to himself. He likes treats and will take them nicely from handlers. He has shown some trouble stepping back into the kennel and has allowed to be toweled, picked up and placed back into his kennel without issue.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to snapping at handlers at the care center, we recommend an adult-only home. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to snapping at handlers at the care center, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression

Potential challenges comments:: Handling/touch sensitivity: Tuffy has snapped at handlers during his medical exam and when attempting to leash/collar him. It is important to be cautious when touching him in other areas as we do not know where he may have other sensitivities. Please see handout on Handling/touch sensitivity. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: At the care center, Tuffy avoids handlers and only approaches for treats. When a handler attempts to place a collar on him, he backs away. After a few attempts, Tuffy snaps when the handler tries to place the collar on him. He will need a slow approach and should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. See handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression.
