Animal Profile

Archer

Hello, my name is Archer. My animal id is #238133. I am a desexed male brown dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 10 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 10/1/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- landlord won't allow.

Archer is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Archer has exhibited significant kennel stress in the care center, repeatedly jumping at his kennel door, bouncing off walls, hypersalivating, and panting heavily in his kennel despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. He has also grabbed leashes during handling and kennel fought when returning from walks. Medically, Archer is apparently healthy.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together! I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I don't always like to share my food, toys or bedding with other animals. I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them.

My medical notes are...

Weight: 55.4 lbs

BIOPSY RESULTS, mass removed on 10/22: INTERPRETATION: Round cell neoplasia - most compatible with a benign cutaneous histiocytoma; mild reactive lymphoid hyperplasia. COMMENTS: The presence of a predominant population of benign histiocytic cells is most consistent with a benign cutaneous histiocytoma. However, less likely a granulomatous inflammatory process or other round cell neoplasia would have to be considered. Cutaneous histiocytomas are common benign neoplasms that occur in the skin of dogs of any age, but are most common in dogs under three years of age. Canine cutaneous histiocytomas are believed to result from abnormal proliferation of antigen-presenting Langerhans cells. These tumors frequently undergo spontaneous regression over time. PLAN: No additional treatments needed at this time. Continue to monitor, p may have future dermal/sq masses (as with any patient) - all further care is the responsibility of the adopter/rescue and they should follow up with their private veterinarian.

Summary:: According to Archer's previous owner(s), with familiar dogs, Archer is playful. With unfamiliar dogs on leash, he is friendly and Outgoing. Unfamiliar dogs off leash, Archer is friendly and outgoing. 10/13/25 Archer is loose and wiggly upon his first interaction with a female dog at the gate, while off leash at the care center. Archer will offer bounces along the gate line, but due to the female dog's reactivity, Archer will greet another female helper dog. When greeting the female helper dog, Archer can be overwhelming, still remaining loose and wiggly, but is excessive with his paw slapping. The helper dog becomes overwhelmed and will correct Archer by snarling, but Archer doesn't pick up on the social cue and must be moved away. Both dogs are separated and returned to kennel. This concludes the interaction. 10/09/25 Due to being under the weather, Archer cannot attend PG.

Summary (6):: 11/11/25 Archer is jumping excessively off of his kennel door while heavily panting. Archer will also jump very high in kennel, grazing his ceiling. As the handler attempts to leash him, he immediately bites the leash, pulling it into kennel. The handler retrieves their leash, and attempts to leash him again but he snaps at the leash. The handler gets a rope toy and administers it to Archer. While tugging the rope toy the handler feeds the loop of their leash onto him. Archer grabs the toy and carries it out of the kennel room. Archer will display a loose frame, while heavily panting, slightly pulling on the leash. He is administered treats in which he will take gently, sitting willingly when soliciting them. Archer's walk commences and he displays a more relaxed frame, trotting alongside the handler. As they enter the facility, he will begin pulling again. Archer quickly enters his kennel. 11/7/25: Archer is observed to hypersalivate, jump on his kennel door and bounce off his kennel walls throughout the day. 11/06/25 (Trainer Note): Archer is standing on the door of his kennel panting heavily as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and pulls moderately to the canine training room. Archer pulls hard towards the enrichment items in the center of the room. Handler attempts to attach a slip lead and he thrashes and vocalizes, attempting to get to the enrichment items. The handler attempts a second time and he does the same. Handler sprays easy cheese onto a surface and Archer eats it as the leash is attached. He then engages readily with the enrichment items. Handler then works with him on doggie zen and polite exchange. Archer engages in both but quickly becomes distracted. He is returned to kennel without issue.

Summary (7):: 10/29/25 (Trainer Note): Archer is at the front of his kennel with a loose body as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and pulls moderately to the canine training room. Archer is loose and social with staff. He engages with interest in polite exchange, readily dropping one toy for another, but opts out of the activity after a few minutes. The handler switches to doggie zen, reinforcing Archer for ignoring the treat. Handler is able to introduce the "leave it" cue and is able to set a treat directly in front of Archer without him taking it. He is easily leashed and returned to kennel without issue. 10/25/25: Archer is observed to launch up to the top of his kennel repeatedly while hypersalivating, heavy panting, and high-pitched whining. 10/19/25: Staff report that Archer is grabbing the leash and pulling it in when they attempt to leash him. The handler fed him treats to distract him while they clipped his collar. He was reported to kennel fight on the way back to his kennel. 10/15/25 (Trainer Note): Archer is at the front of his kennel with a loose body as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and pulls moderately to the canine training room. Archer is loose and social with staff, jumping up to solicit contact. He is not very interested in treats, but the handler is able to engage him briefly in doggie zen. Archer is much more interested in toys and readily trades the handler one toy for another. He is easily leashed and pulls moderately back to kennel. 10/13/25: Archer is at the front of his kennel with a neutral frame as the handler approaches. He is leashed with ease and pulls moderately to the play yard where he is clipped to a drag leash. (see Dog-Dog summary for more details) After playing, Archer is returned to his kennel where he is secured safely. 10/12/25: Archer is observed to leap up multiple times in kennel, rebound off his kennel walls and continue to do so even after a handler throws a toy into his kennel. 10/2/25: Archer is standing at the front of his kennel with a tense body as handler approaches. He is able to be leashed with ease and he is taken to the behavior room for his assessment. In the room, he has a tense body as he would jump up on the handlers. He would lean into the handler while lip licking when being petted near his collar and neck. Please see behavior assessment notes for more details. He is hesitant to go back into kennel, and is slowly guided in with slight leash pressure.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): We recommend Archer be placed in a home without children due to his handling/touch sensitivity, leash biting, resource guarding, and potential for defensive behaviors.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting

Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: In his previous home, Archer was reported to guard valuable items such as toys, treats (bones, rawhides), and random objects. He displayed a tense body posture and hovered over these items, indicating possessiveness and potential for guarding behavior. Management strategies should include trading exercises and gradual desensitization to reduce guarding tendencies. Please see the handout on Resource Guarding. Basic Manners/Poor Impulse Control: Archer frequently jumps up, suggesting a lack of impulse control and basic manners. Consistent redirection, reinforcement of calm behavior, and structured training sessions can help improve his self-regulation and reduce jumping. Please see the handout on Basic Manners/Poor Impulse Control. Handling/Touch Sensitivity: During his handling assessment, Archer showed signs of discomfort including lip licking and a head whip response when his shoulder or neck was touched. These behaviors suggest sensitivity to touch and may require slow, consent-based handling and positive reinforcement to build tolerance.Please see the handout on Handling/Touch Sensitivity. Fearful/Potential for Defensive Aggression: In his prior home, Archer was noted to bark or growl when startled, although he was not consistently bothered by sudden stimuli. This mixed response indicates a potential for defensive aggression under stress, and he may benefit from confidence-building exercises and predictable routines to reduce reactivity. Please see the handout on Fearful/Potential for Defensive Aggression. Leash Biting | Barrier Frustration: Archer was reported to leash bite when handlers attempt to leash him for a walk. He would bite and pull the lead into his kennel, but did take treats when offered. Once out, he then began to kennel fight as he passed other dogs on the way out. Please see the handout on Arousal.
