Animal Profile

Spot

Hello, my name is Spot. My animal id is #65636. I am a desexed male white dog at the . The shelter thinks I am about 8 years 1 months 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 6/11/2019, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- moving - out of country.

Reserved

Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

Spot is at risk for behavior concerns. While Spot had been showing some improvement behaviorally, he has now begun to deteriorate and is displaying behaviors not before seen. He was observed to escalate rapidly to growling and jumping on a handler who walked passed him; he was unable to readily settle and required handler intervention. He also was observed to growl when his harness was being clipped. There are no medical concerns for him at this time.

You may know me from such films as...

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

A volunteer writes: The best way I can describe Spot is "a big ol' ball of love!" He's super-sweet and friendly and just LOVES attention. He got all wiggly and waggly when I interacted with him, but the best was when he stood up and leaned into me for doggie hugs, then thanked me with kisses! He's a big boy, but walked nicely on a leash and took treats very gently. Spot likes to keep busy by playing with toys and chew bones; and loves to burn off energy with a good game of fetch (though long, brisk walks work well too!). I just love hanging out with Spot and think you will too, so come and meet this happy, playful boy today at the Brooklyn ACC shelter, where he's excitedly awaiting his fur-ever home.

My medical notes are...

Weight: 69 lbs

Summary:: According to Spot's previous owner, he has not lived with other dogs but when on walks he is described as respectful. 6/12: When off leash at the Care Center, Spot is introduced to a novel female dog. He sees the female approaching the gate and he stiffens and begins to chuff. As the female walks closer to the gate he begins to hard bark and jumps on the gate. The gate is not opened and an off-leash interaction is not conducted. 7/12: Due to Spot's previous behavior in group he was muzzled prior to an on-leash introduction. Spot focuses on the greeter and leans forward. He oscillates between pawing at the muzzle and fixating on the greeter. Later in the session the muzzle is taken off but his leash is held. He rushes towards the female, continuing to display a tense posture.

Date of intake:: 6/11/2019

Summary:: Exuberant, loose bodied

Date of initial:: 6/11/2019

Summary:: Wagging, seeks contact, jumping up

ENERGY LEVEL:: Spot has been observed to exhibit a medium-high level of energy during his interactions in the care center. We cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment, but we recommend that he be provided daily mental and physical stimulation as an outlet for his energy.

IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: 7/28: Spot was reported to growl at a handler who went to clip a leash to his harness upon being returned from the play yard to his kennel. 7/27: Spot was spending time with a volunteer and staff member inside an office space. A second staff member entered the room. Spot initially greeted him with a loose body and jumped up onto him. As the staff member moved away towards the back of the office, Spot low growled and jumped on him again. He was redirected by the volunteer briefly but jumped onto the desk, growling and began to mouth the staff member's arm. Spot was called away and returned to his kennel. 7/24: Spot allowed a familiar handler attached his leash onto his harness while in his kennel. He walked outside with a soft body, and stayed close to the handler. In the pens, Spot solicited attention by leaning onto the handler. He curved his body and allowed her to rub and scratch his back. Spot engaged in a game of fetch. and repeatedly brought the ball to the handler, allowing her to touch him when it was in his mouth. When it was time to go back into his kennel, Spot walked back with no issues.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks

Recommendations comments:: Place with a New Hope partner: While Spot has been observed to display social behavior for the majority of his stay, he was recently observed to escalate rapidly to growling and jumping up towards a handler who walked passed him; he was unable to readily settle and required handler intervention. Due to the intensity of the observed behavior, we feel as though Spot may be best set up to succeed if placed with an experienced rescue partner. Force-free, reward based training only is advised as well as seeking guidance from a professional trainer or veterinary behaviorist should challenges arise in a new home environment. No children (under 13): Due to Spot's observed kennel presence, fearful behavior and reported destructive behavior, we feel it would be best for him to be placed in a stable, adult-only home environment to ensure his success. It is advised that the new adopters should be able to exercise appropriate and safe management when handling Spot, allowing him to acclimate and decompress at his own pace. Force-free, reward-based training only is advised when introducing or exposing Spot to new and unfamiliar situations, as well as utilizing guidance from a qualified, professional trainer/behaviorist. Single-pet home/Recommend no dog parks: Due to the concerning behaviors that Spot has shown during playgroup (see DOG-DOG BEHAVIOR SUMMARY), we feel that Spot should not visit dog parks and be the only resident dog. The Behavior Department recommends that he be socialized in a more controlled setting until his behavior towards other dogs can be further addressed. Reward-based, force-free training can be utilized to help Spot associate dogs with things he enjoys like toys or treats.

Potential challenges: : Destructive behavior,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Kennel presence

Potential challenges comments:: His previous owner reported Spot to destroy items, dig, and bark when left alone in the yard. This behavior has not been observed during his interactions in the care center. Please refer to the handout for Destructive behavior. Spot has been observed to low growl and hard bark when staff approach his kennel. Once he is removed from the kennel, this behavior is not observed during his walks or interactions. Should this behavior arise in a home environment, please refer to the handout for Kennel presence. Spot was observed to escalate to growling and jumping up towards a handler who walked by him, unable to readily settle without handler intervention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression.
