Animal Profile

Shadow

Hello, my name is Shadow. My animal id is #74947. I am a male gray dog at the . The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 9/5/2019.

Reserved

Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

Shadow is at risk due to behavior conditions, New Hope Only determination. Shadow has show touch sensitivity and is fearful of novel stimuli. Shadow should go to an adult only environment prepared to manage behavior seen in care center. Shadow does have some medical concerns such as alopecia that will need attention.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

A staff member writes: Hi there, I'm Shadow. I came to MACC via the police because I got into a liiiiittttle argument with my house mate dog. Let's just say it didn't go too well for me and the staff here at Manhattan Animal Care Centers had to fix me up really well. I'm still pretty grumpy from my fight and haven't been the most outgoing, but I know I can be happy again if just placed in the right environment. I still have a little healing to do, both emotionally and physically, but I just need to be given a chance. Could you be my 2nd chance at happiness?

My medical notes are...

Weight: 50 lbs

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow

Date of intake:: 9/5/2019

Spay/Neuter status:: No

Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray

Date of assessment:: 9/17/2019

Summary:: At the care center, Shadow has growled and barked at some handlers who approach his kennel. While he has at other times allowed handlers to leash him and take him out, he remains fearful and uncomfortable with handling, barking and moving away. Out of concern for his stress levels, he is not a good candidate for a handling assessment at this time.

Date of initial:: 9/5/2019

Summary:: Growling, sedated for exam

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Shadow so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. At the care center, he displays a medium level of activity.

IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: 9/6/19- Shadow comes to the front and sniffs the leash and then growls. He sniffs the treats thrown in but does not eat them. He was not taken out. 9/7/19- Shadow was laying down upon approach. He growled some but stopped when given treats. He came forward for treats. he dodge the leash at first but once leash comes out willingly. He walks nicely responding to handler direction. 9/8/19- Shadow came forward but didn't like treats handler had. He growled when attempted to leash. He was not taken out. 9/9/19- Shadow did not want the chicken offered him, but he was at the front wanting to come out. He dodge the leash once but than allowed it. He ignores the handler but walks nicely on leash. No issues going back. 9/10/19- No interest in any treats. He stands barking and gave a growl when attempted to leash. On the third attempt Shadow is barking at first but than came to the front and allowed leashing. He ignores the handler. No issues going back. 9/11-9/12/19-Shadow is barking upon approach but allows leashing. Still no interest in handler but walks well. No issues going back.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to how uncomfortable Snow is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: Shadow is fearful at the care center, growling at handlers, and uncomfortable with handling. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression

Potential challenges comments:: Handling/touch sensitivity: Shadow is uncomfortable with handling at the care center, moving away and barking when it is attempted. Please see handout on Handling/touch sensitivity. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Shadow has growled at handlers at the care center. He will need a slow approach and time to acclimate to new surroundings. Please see handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression.
