Hailey

Hello, my name is Hailey. My animal id is #80487. I am a desexed female black cat at the . The shelter thinks I am about 6 years 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 11/2/2019.

Reserved

Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

Hailey is at risk for behavioral reasons. Hailey has shown to be quickly overstimulated with interaction and would be best suited for placement with a new hope partner that can provide a low stress environment. Medically, Hailey seems healthy.

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 5. Red

KNOWN HISTORY:: Hailey was brought in as a stray, so we don't have any behavioral history or tendencies in a home environment.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 11/3/19 By the front with a low body and wide pupils. Seems wary of surroundings but engages when offered temptation treats and eats them in front of the assessor. Allows gentle strokes on the head while eating. 11/04/19 Resting inside cat den, ignores assessor when coaxed. Becomes alert when door opens and focuses on scratcher tool as it extend toward the door. She hisses and starts to growl, so tried offering tuna on the scratcher. She carefully sniffed it, and then started eating. She'll even poke her head out of the den to eat, but still hisses each time I reached toward her to give her tuna. Has potential to warm up. 11/5/19 In his den looking through the holes with wide pupils. Becomes alert on approach. Doesn’t come out when spoken softly nor when coaxed with temptation treats but eats them when given through the holes. He hisses and growls at the assessor but continues to eat the treats. Cage cover given. 11/6/19 Resting inside her den, but doesn't respond when coaxed. She becomes alert when cage door opens and looks out the peep holes with dilated eyes. She slowly shifts around in the den to sniff the scratcher tool when offered tuna. She carefully pokes her head out the opening and eats the tuna from the tool, but doesn't come all the way out. She will allow gentle petting while eating, but after a few reps she retreats fully back inside and hisses and growls from within the den. 11/7/19 Resting in den. Slowly comes halfway out when coaxed with chicken fillet and eats it in front of the assessor. Accepts pets on the head while eating. Still tense but doesn’t mind attention if you approach him calmly. 11/13/19 Resting in the den when approached by the assessor. Curious and pops out head. Eyes wide, ears erect and forward. Sniffs the assess-a-hand and head rubs. Accepted brief pets on the head, but quickly retreated and pats the hand to stop the interaction. Displaying conflicting behavior. 11/14/19 Inside his den. Pokes head out on approach and makes eye contact with slightly dilated pupils. Sniffs treats when offered and licks them hesitant. Allows gentle petting on the head and head-butts the scratcher but start stress meowing and then growls. Gave more treats and feliway. Still conflicted. 11/16/19 Rubbing against the door back and forth chirping, reaching out at first with a soft paw pulling my hand closer. With the door open accepts petting with very high energy and a high tail, tall body, but quickly overstimulates and gets swatted, but not with nails. Later give a little hiss and becomes more swatty. Improving over all. 11/18/19 By the front and tries to reach out to grab assessor with her paw. She head-butts and rubs her body against the cage door, soliciting attention. She accepts gentle petting, but quickly gets over-stimulated and will hiss and swipe to avoid additional petting. Needs positive reinforcement, but doing much better!

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Laid back

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Social,Demanding,Curious,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Overstimulation,Very high energy level

Potential challenges comments:: Hailey is social and affectionate but appears to be easily overstimulated. As a result of this observed behavior we recommend adopters who are familiar with signs of behavioral arousal and agitation in cats, so that interactions can be ended before she becomes overstimulated. We also recommend fishing pole-type toys for play as they allow for interaction and vigorous, stimulating exercise while keeping human hands at a distance. Hailey is an active young cat who would benefit from increased mental and physical stimulation to appropriately direct her energy. We recommend using fishing pole-type toys as they allow for vigorous and stimulating exercise. Puzzle feeders will also keep her engaged and exercise her brain in addition to her body.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Hailey was out in the kennel rubbing on the bars of the door back and forth giving chirps and using a soft paw to pull the assessor's hand closer. With the door open she rubbed against the assessor, seemed to enjoy all petting, made a few more chirps with a high tail, tall body and fairly relaxed eyes before becoming a bit overstimulated, becoming a bit swatty with mostly soft paws. Then distracted with treats she allowed a brief pick up without complaint. Then a bit later on another visit she become more swatty and a little hissy ending the interaction. She is making progress. Hailey is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has tried to swat and does not currently tolerate much petting or handling but she does accept some. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
