Let's get to know each other a bit more...

A staff member writes, "Hi there, name is Koko. I am friendly and confident cat, but I prefer to keep interactions short. My body is a bit sensitive and I don't like it when people are petting me for long periods of time. Like, I know I'm cute and all but a guy needs his alone time too! I would like someone who understands and respects me, and will listen to my tail when I'm telling them I'm at my limit. If you're a cat savvy independent fella like me, want to be my pal?"

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 6/11/19 Resting in the den. Comes out and chirps at the assessor for attention and then stretches. Allows a few strokes on the head with the scratcher tool but then retreats, hisses and lifts paw as a warning. Might be displaying conflicting behavior. 6/12/19 Greets by the front and meows softly. Tries to push head out of kennel space and looks around. Allows gentle petting on head and body and will lean in for cheek rubs. His body twitches when pet along his back, but seems to tolerate soft and gentle strokes. Will start to grumble after a moment and nips the assessor's hand lightly as a warning. 6/16/19 Sitting by the front with a soft body. Meows for attention upon approach. Sniffs the assessor’s hand and head-butts it. Allows petting along the head and body with tail high but kept the interaction short due to pet-induced. Ignores treats for petting. Curious of his surroundings. Purrs throughout the interaction. 6/17/19 Curled up in the middle of the kennel, calm and relaxed. Blinks sleepily when pet and starts to knead on blanket. Doesn't seem to mind petting on body and remains calm throughout the interaction. No over-stimulation today. Okay to remove from socialization list, but keeping determination as is due to reports of potential swatting.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Mellow

VOCAL:: Somewhat chatty

CHARACTER TYPE: : Curious,Timid,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful

Potential challenges comments:: Koko has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Experienced, adult only

Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Koko may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home who understands this cat may need time to warm up to his new home and family at his own pace.
