Lilo
Hello, my name is Lilo. My animal id is #215027. I am a desexed male white dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 11/29/2024, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - aggressive towards people.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormLilo is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Lilo was surrendered by his previous owner due to behavioral concerns in the home including a multiple bite history, resource guarding, handling/touch sensitivity, and defensive escalations toward strangers. The bites were reported to have broken skin and blood. Similar behaviors have been displayed during his stay in care. Lilo becomes uncomfortable with leashing, escalating to hard barking, growling, snapping, and lunging, and displays fearful body language when taken out for interactions. He does accept cheese slices from select handlers. Medically, Lilo is apparently healthy.

Date of assessment:: 12/4/2024
Summary:: Due to Lilo Multiple bite history and only allowing minimal handling with selective handlers, Behavior believes he is not a good candidate for a handling assessment at this time.
Summary (6):: 12/10/24 Lilo is sitting in front of the kennel appearing to be nervous. Lilo will scurry to the back of his kennel and dart back and forth with a tucked tail. The handler will stroke Lilo with the lead and he will grumble. The handler proceeds to lassoes Lilo and Lilo will jump out of kennel. Lilo is taken to the live room. Lilo will explore upon arrival, maintaining a tucked tail while trembling. He will display whale eyes with pinned back ears. Lilo will attempt to maintain his distance from the handler but somehow return and linger next to them. Lilo will sniff the handler walk away and return. The handler will sit in a chair off to the side and Lilo will follow, sitting under them. Lilo displays a neutral frame while remaining planted. Lilo will grumble when spoken to. Lilo will then seek an exit, pushing the room door. Lilo is returned to kennel. His kennel is a mess, so the handler quickly fixes it up before placing Lilo back in kennel. 12/9/24: Lilo briefly avoided leash before exiting kennel willingly and walking to the live room. He was switched to a drag leash with stopper. Lilo explored the room and displayed exit seeking behavior. When a familiar handler favored by Lilo entered the room he became loose and bouncy. Lilo would run and jump onto handler two's lap, climbing all over them and accepting pets. He would jump quite high and seemed as though he was about to have zoomies. He was tolerant as handler 2 switched him back to a pre-clipped slip leash and he was returned to kennel with ease. 12/8/24: Lilo's behavior in care remains the same. 12/5: Lilo's behavior mostly remains the same although he accepts cheese from one select handler and tolerates that handler collaring him. 12/4: Lilo was at the front of his kennel when a handler passed. They see his paw tangled in his bed and attempt to remove him to untangle/free him. Lilo immediately runs to the back of his kennel, barking, growling, and baring his teeth with one paw raised with whale eyes. He dodges and snaps at the lead before the handler finally leashes him. He is brought to the behavior office where the handler is able to remove the bed from his paw. He is then placed on a slip lead with a stopper to give him some time to settle before being returned. Lilo explores the room before approaching the handler and taking cheese with a soft mouth from their fingers. Lilo shows no other interest in interaction or toys at that point, only focusing on the cheese. He briefly walks away to relieve himself before returning for more cheese. Lilo then jumps up into the handler's lap and rests on their arms while overwhelming himself in the process. He tenses, his eyes widen, and his tail tucks. The handler slowly lowers Lilo to avoid startling him and he scurries away. Then the handler attempts to leash him and he dodges the lead, so the handler walks him back with the slip lead and uses a hook to remove it.
Summary (7):: 12/3/24: Lilo avoided leash by backing into corner of kennel but did not flail or snap. Once lassoed he exited kennel willingly and was taken for a walk on the street. Lilo startled at times but otherwise kept a moderate pace. Lilo sounded like he might be getting sick (mild coughing) so handler kept walk short due to the cold weather. Lilo was returned to kennel with ease where handler used a hook to remove leash which Lilo tolerated well. 12/02/24: Lilo is lying at the back corner of kennel with a tense, trembling body as handler approaches. He is avoidant of leashing and will jump up and snap at the lead multiple times. Lilo is leashed and handler opens the door wide, moving away from the door to give plenty of space for Lilo to exit. He stays planted so handler uses light directional leash pressure to guide him out of kennel. Lilo walks behind the handler to the Live Room. He walks across the room and plants himself under the chair. Lilo maintains a tense, trembling frame throughout his time in the room. Handler kneels down and speaks to Lilo with a soft voice but he does not approach. After his time in the room, Lilo is returned to kennel safely. Handler uses the hook to remove his lead from his neck and Lilo barks and avoids. 12/1/24: Lilo was lying in back corner of kennel when handler approached. He flinched when handler made attempts to leash him but otherwise remained still in the corner. Once leash was over head Lilo did not respond to verbal coaxing out of kennel. Handler slowly slid soiled bedding and uneaten meal out and provided a soft dog bed for his comfort. Lilo had eaten his medication. Lilo did not react as food and water bowls were removed from kennel. A towel was placed covering one side of kennel. Handler left a toy and a handful of chicken breast in kennel before ending interaction. 11/30/24: Lilo is lying at the back of kennel with a tense, trembling body as handler approaches. He is leashed with ease and as the lead tightens around his neck, he thrashes slightly. Lilo readily exits the kennel and walks with a trembling body to the Canine Behavior Office. Lilo approaches a handler as they are sitting at the computer and will sniff their leg before sitting next to them under the desk. Lilo remains sitting under the desk for the remainder of his time in the room. Lilo is guided out from under the desk and is returned to kennel safely. His lead is removed with a hook.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),No cats,Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13)- Due to Lilo bite Bite history we recommend he is placed in an adult only home at this time. No cats-Lilo will hard bark, growl, snap, and lunge at cats. Place with a New Hope partner- Lilo was surrendered to the care center due to his escalating behavioral concerns, including resource guarding, fear-based responses, and a history of bites. In the previous home, Lilo guarded items that fell onto the floor, escalating to bites when attempts were made to retrieve the items. He has bitten a total of five times, all breaking skin and drawing blood, though none required medical attention beyond home care. The most recent bite occurred on 11/19/2024, when Lilo bit his owner while she attempted to separate him from another dog after he began growling. In the care center, Lilo has presented with significant fear and anxiety. He frequently retreats to the back of his kennel, displaying a tense and trembling body posture. While he can be leashed with caution, he often avoids handling by snapping at the leash or retreating. Once leashed, Lilo may either remain planted or walk with a tense body, showing signs of stress such as trembling and avoidance. In quieter environments, Lilo may cautiously approach handlers, but he remains highly wary of human contact and prefers to stay in confined spaces like under a desk. Due to this Lilo is available for rescue through one of our New Hope partners.
