Date of assessment:: 11/11/2025

Summary:: Lucy has been obsvered to be highly fearful during her stay in the care center. Noted to baulk and pancake on leash and is unable to be coaxed forwards. When a sling was used Lucy began to head whip towards handlers. Due to the high level of fear, stress, and anxiety Lucy is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time.

Summary (6):: 11/13/25- Lucy is at the back of her kennel laying down, she comes to the front with a neutral body and is easily leashed. She is taken to the play yard. Handlers walk to the last pen and when they try to enter a pen Lucy plants. They present treats but Lucy doesn’t sniff nor engage with handler as they softly speak to her. Handler decides to walk the perimeter. Once at the back gate of the play yard Lucy stares out through the gate with a neutral body being aloof with handler. They offer more treats but she shows no interest. Handler walks back in the direction they came Lucy follows momentarily then plants again. They let her stare through the gate for a few moments. They start to walk in the direction and she follows momentarily then plants again. Throughout she remains aloof and neutral bodied with handler. They softly talk to her and she allows handler to scratch her head, neck and back. Handler attempts again to walk back and Lucy plants. Handler applies tension to her leash but she didn’t move forward. Other handler gets a sling and when they come back to apply she keeps turning toward them with her head and body being avoidant and slightly tense bodied. After some time Lucy starts to walk to move away from second handler with the sling. She is easily clipped walking back into the building and readily enters her kennel without further issue. 11/12/25: Lucy is lying down in kennel as the handler approaches. When the handler calls her name, Lucy stands up and comes to the front of her kennel with a soft body. The handler then feeds her treats, which she softly takes. After a few minutes of feeding her treats, Lucy sniffs the handler's hand through the kennel door. The handler tosses treats in Lucy's kennel and ends the interaction.

Summary (7):: 11/10/25: Lucy is at the front of the kennel hard barking and baring teeth towards handlers. 11/10/25: ACS report that during her AM walk Lucy baulked while on leash in the yard and had to be belly banded (a sling was used) to bring her back to the building. During her mid day walk Lucy was taken to the street and she baulked in the middle of the street. A belly band was needed to return her to the care center. 11/9/25: ACS staff called for assistance with returning Lucy to the shelter from her walk. She stopped moving and a sling was used under her hips to help her move forward. She refused to move and was reported to head whip towards handlers. Handlers used two slings under the chest and the hips to lift her onto a cart. The cart was wheeled slowly back into the shelter. Lucy was lifted off the cart and was brought back to the kennel. She still refused to walk with the handlers as she was carried back to kennel where she was returned without issue.

Date of intake:: 11/7/2025

Summary:: Relaxed body

Date of initial:: 11/7/2025

Summary:: Neutral body, growls for HWT test (touching paws), remains tense

ENERGY LEVEL:: Lucy is described as medium energy. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for them.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend a home with no children. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: Handling Sensitivity: Lucy's previous owner states that she fearful and might snap when her paws are touched. During her medical exam Lucy was obsvered to growl when her paws were touched. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach DOG to be more comfortable with this. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. Fearful Defensive: Lucy's previous owner states that she will hard bark towards strangers and that she is fearful of loud noises. In care Lucy has been obsvered to baulk and pancake while on leash. This behavior is unable to be redirected using coaxing. When a sling is used Lucy begins to head whip. It is important to move slowly with Lucy, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Anxiety: Lucy's previous owner states that she has general anxiety. If Lucy displays anxious behavior in their future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving them other things to focus on to alleviate their anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety. On Leash Reactive: Lucy's previous owner states that she will react to squirrels and that she will lunge and snap at them. Lucy will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
