Latte
Hello, my name is Latte. My animal id is #213135. I am a male unknown (update later) cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 1 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 10/25/2024.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormLatte is on the At Risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and is deteriorating in the Adoptions room. He is now displaying signs of petting-induced aggression, boredom and frustration, overstimulation. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

KNOWN HISTORY:: Latte was brought in with limited information on her behavior history in a home environment.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 11/2/24 FB47 Latte was lying inside the den and growled when he heard me approach. I saw him with the mirror tool. He appeared fairly calm, ignored treats, moved slightly in response to the laser and remain in place. 11/13/24 FB26 Under the weather, hisses upon approach. He slowly lifts up paw while leaning away. When still he squints allowing cheek and head rubs with the scratcher tool. After a few pets he closes his eyes and remains still from on top of the den. 11/15/24 FB47 Latte is in the cubby lying quietly excepted and enjoyed all petting and was very sweet. 12/3/24 FB26 The interaction involved resting at the front upon approach, allowing petting on the head with a scratcher tool. Latte responded by head-butting and gently patting the tool to signal the end. The interaction was kept brief, and treats were given, which he ate before it concluded. 12/4/24 Vol. Latte was lying down on shelf in kennel, with his limbs spread out from body. His eyes and ears were neutral. He rolled over partially when spoken to, then came down to front of kennel with his tail in the air. When I reached out to offer treats, he swatted in my direction. I removed my hand and gave him a minute to reset, then he accepted treats without swatting. He rubbed his face on kennel bars in response to sweet talk, but continued to swat when offered my hand. He lay back down, with loose body and squinty eyes, on shelf, and rolled around, but reached through bars to swat in my direction if I stood too close. He appeared very conflicted about receiving attention this morning. 12/6/24 FB26 Sitting upright by the front alert with soft eyes. Ears relaxed and forward. He sniffs the hand and head bunts it while eating offered treats. 12.08.2024 FB04 Rolling around rubbing against door and accepting head pets through the kennel bars during AM interaction. Was humping blanket in the PM.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Social,Demanding,Playful,Curious,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Pet-induced aggression,Fearful,New home adjustment period
Potential challenges comments:: For information on petting-induced aggression, see this article: https://www.aspca.org/pet-care/virtual-pet-behaviorist/cat-behavior/petting-induced-aggression Initially Latte solicits attention, but when coming too close to attempt petting she begins to hiss and swat at the assessor. This may be a sign of petting-induced aggression, where physical contact results in discomfort for the cat, or it may be a sign of overstimulation. As a result of this observed behavior we recommend adopters who are familiar with signs of behavioral arousal and agitation in cats, so that interactions can be ended before Latte becomes reactive. Treats should be used to reward appropriate responses to physical attention.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 10/30/24: Latte was inside the den and appeared alert, with wide eyes and ears erect. When approached with a scratcher tool through the side portal door, she swatted at it. She started to low growl but became curious when offered treats, sniffing the tool and eating the treats placed in front of her. However, she slowly retreated further into the den, avoiding contact and remaining wary of her surroundings, continuing to low growl. 11/11/24: Latte has made significant improvements since her first assessment. She was lying calmly on top of the den, squinted her eye a bit when spoken too, but sniffed treats and allowed the assessor to approach, accepted all petting around the cheeks, and once the assessor pulled back she ate squeeze up treats and then came down off the den. 12.04.2024: Latte came out from resting in her cubby as soon as she heard the door open. She sniffed the chicken staff and insatiably gobbled it up. She sniffed the assessor's hand, and licked it. When the assessor attempted petting, she raised her paw slowly, flattened her ears then batted their hand. A second attempt to make contact was made using the scratch tool. She hissed, flattened her ears and swatted the tool repeatedly. Latte is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has tried to swat, scratch, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
