BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY

Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to how uncomfortable Sparky is currently with touch and novel stimuli, as well as his behavior in his previous home, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to all noted concerns displayed in a home environment, as well as Sparky having allowed minimal handling at the care center, the behavior department recommends he be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Sparky to acclimate comfortably to her new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Sparky to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Sparky presents with outside of the care centers.

Potential challenges: : House soiling,Resource guarding,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: House soiling: Sparky is noted to have accidents in the house, and will likely need guidance with house training. We recommend positive reinforcement, reward-based training only. Resource guarding: Sparky is reported to bark, growl, and snap if his food, treats, or toys are touched. We recommend that Sparky be left along while eating, and that food guarding behavior modification steps (available at ASPCApro.org) be utilized if this behavior is problematic in his future home. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Sparky's mouth, and any time something is removed he should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. He should be taught the "drop" cue and trade-up games. Handling/touch sensitivity: Sparky is reported to bark, growl, and snapped when brushed or bathed. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Sparky to be more comfortable with this. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Sparky is to bark and growl at new people. At the care center, he has allowed minimal handling, growling and snapping. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is recommended to assess behavior after decompression in a new home environment. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing or exposing Sparky to new and unfamiliar situations. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Sparky is reported to be reactive to to dogs that he sees. Sparky may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach him to look at you rather than other dogs.  We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior.
