Pre-Screener Form

Charlie is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Charlie came to our care center as an owner surrender. During her care in our center she has been observed growling, snarling, and displaying high levels of fear. On walks, she thrashes and pancakes, though staff are sometimes able to coax her along. Charlie has snapped towards handler's hands when they attempt to clip their leash and has caught one handler's hand without breaking skin. Owner has reported that Charlie is social, affectionate along with being an active, vocal dog. She is crate trained, knows social cues like sit/ stay and her favorite toys are dog ropes. Medically, Charlie has dental disease.

Date of assessment:: 11/5/2025

Summary:: In the Care centers, Charlie is highly fearful. She was observed to growl, bare her teeth, snarl and thrash when handled. Due to these behaviors, Charlie will not get a handling assessment.

Summary (6):: 11/11/25 (KSV)- Charlie is laying at the back of his kennel with a neutral body. Handler bends down and softly talks to him. They offer him treats but he shows no interest. They toss it to him but he just leans slightly towards it and just sniffs in the general direction of the treat. Charlie stays laying down and just stares at handler. They put their hand to his kennel door but doesn’t react. Interaction is ended.

Summary (7):: 11/5/25: (PM) (LATE ENTRY): Charlie is at the front of her kennel, neutral body. She is not interested in treats but easily leashed without them and removed from kennel. She is walked in the yard where she is neutral and aloof, not sniffing or exploring. She will walk and stop. Handler directs her to walk around the perimeter of the yard and in and out of pens. Upon returning to kennel, Charlie, pulls back on leash and moves her head back and forth. Handler walks with her back into the hall. She lays flat on the ground. A second handler offers treats to no avail. Handler coaxes her forward and she stands. The second handler attempts a belly band but Charlie spins and sits facing second handler. The second handler places another leash on her and when the go to clip the leash, Charlie head whips making contact on the handlers hand (no broken skin) while vocalizing. Handlers then muscle her back into kennel. She allows handlers to use the hook to remove the leashes. 11/05/25: Charlie is laying at the front of her kennel as handlers approach. She is offered treats but does not accept any, she stands as handler presents the leash and is leashed without issue. Charlie exits kennel and walks with handlers out to the street for her walk, she walks across the street and sniffs briefly before baulking and refusing to walk forward. Handlers turn around and walk back to the building, once in the driveway Charlie begins pancaking, handler coaxes her forward with leash pressure and she eventually continues walking. She begins pulling toward medical staff members she passes in the hallway but walks with handler for a bit down the hall and into the backyard to finish the remainder of the walk. In the backyard Charlie follows handlers into the play yard where she is tense and does not initially explore. She is offered treats but does not accept, eventually she begins slowly walking around and sniffing and relieves herself. She then begins sniffing at the play yard door so handler opens it and follows her back inside. She baulks a bit at the doorway to her room but continues with leash pressure. She baulks again at the front of kennel but is muscled in and interaction is ended. 11/05/25: ACS report that when returning to kennel Charlie began snarling, jumping up high, vocalizing and thrashing while on leash. Charlie had to be double leashed to be returned to kennel.
