Animal Profile

Beemo

Hello, my name is Beemo. My animal id is #218514. I am a desexed male black tabby cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 5 months old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 5/3/2025, with the surrender reason stated as not a fit - too many animals already.

Beemo is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has slightly warmed up to staff using high-valued treats to build a positive association; however, he is sensitive and nervous when petted. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

What my friends at ACC say about me: I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. Beemo has made significant improvement since his last assessment, and while he's grabby and doesn't appreciate his back being touched, he can be pet on his head-at least while eating squeeze-up treats. He remains fairly calm but needs a slow approach. Beemo tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may be a little more independent and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. A volunteer writes: Before Beemo came to the Care Center, he had it all: a home with many rooms and a big window, plenty of toys, and an understanding owner who loved how cuddly and loving he could be while also having an independent side. But through no fault of his own, Beemo is now with us, and the adjustment to shelter life has been tough for this gorgeous black beauty. Slowly he's been opening up and stretching his boundaries, but it's hard for sensitive souls like Beemo who have had the comfy life they knew upended. If you're looking for a loyal pal with a stellar resume as an affectionate, well-behaved house cat, please don't overlook our boy Beemo. We just know there's a true forever home for him out there. Shy and withdrawn as he is right now, he won't come to you--be the one to make the first move and restore his faith in humans.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: PREVIOUS ASSESSMENT 5/5/25 Beemo watched nervously from his den, eyes wide. He growled softly and retreated, curling tightly against the back. When approached with the scratcher tool for pets, he sniffed it anxiously but hissed and spat. 5/9/25 Vol. #1 Behind Shore Line cover on top of hidey box, looking around, eyes wide, pupils dilated. Hissed, 1/2 lunge and spat when lifted cover to read report. Based on history - opened door and tried laser toy - Beemo watched but got distracted by movement in room, tensing up and backing up. Ended interaction #2 Came back later, Beemo crouched on top of box, alert. Opened cage door and tried laser toy - Beemo watched hand and the toy carefully and sometimes looked at the little red dot. No hissing. Alert to noise and movement. Turned off toy and put in treat bowl- he flinched back. Turned toy back on - he watched and then rearranged himself in a more relaxed position - legs out. Used toy a little more, sweet talk and ended interaction 5/10/25 Vol. On top of den when approached & spoken to. Growled. Drooling. Offered dry treats on a scratcher tool & left them nearby. Looked at them & Ignored. Offered squeeze up on scratcher tool. Sniffed & backed up & growled. Licking lips. Left a little bit of squeeze up nearby & in the food tray. End of interaction. Seconds later, he was eating the dry treats that were left on the top of the den. 5/11/24 Vol. While cleaning, was hiding in den out of sight. Had not come out to eat any breakfast. Spat when the portal door was closed and maintained a low growl throughout. Briefly poked head out to sniff a cup of treats on the tool, then went back to growling. Checked back after >5 minutes and had not eaten any. 5/23/25 Vol. On top of hidey box, stress meowed when approached, eyes wide, ears forward, tense and alert. Watched treat bowl - ignored. Approached with scratcher tool - Beemo swatted it (but not that hard) a number of times and then turned his head. Went to get rod to open hidey box door (did not want to continue without giving him opportunity to retreat if needed)  and when came back (with Evelyn) he was down eating the treats. He retreated to top and hidey box opened. Approached again with tool and he swatted very gently, almost like a toy, watching closely, letting the tool very close to him but jumping if it touched. Let tool rest, removed and ended interaction. *Enrichment Notes continued in GAN*
