Ying Yang is on the At Risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. Pre-Screener Form A volunteer writes: Ying Yang is a young cat who is trying to find his place in the world. This can be a challenge for many of us on even the best of days, but Ying Yang's search is feeling a bit more complicated because he knows his place is not the Care Center. He says emphatically in his own cat way, lest we forget. But we won't because this isn't who Ying Yang was before and it's not his future, either. Before Ying Yang came to us, he would run to his person's legs, he'd talk with them about their days, and maintain an adorably hopeful curiosity about his surroundings, including other cats!

KNOWN HISTORY:: Ying Yang was brought in with limited information on his behavior history in a home environment.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 9/1/24 Vol. Ying Yang was in his den. I placed Temptations inside the den and he hissed and growled at me. I spoke to him and petted him with the scratcher. He calmed down and accepted the petting without hissing. He did not eat his treats. I ended the interaction and covered the side of the den. He peeked out at me for a while, then retreated further into the den so I could not see him. 9/4/24 FB79 Inside his den, Ying Yang hisses when the den cover is lifted as well as when the tool is brought closer to his den opening in attempt to pet him. I leave some treats near the den door and respect his space. 9/10/24 FB1261 In cat den upon approach, body low, ears tilted, body low, eyes wide and tail curled around feet. he tolerates petting today while opening his eyes wider, flattening his ears and turning to watch the tool. I keep the interaction very brief and leave treats and a catnip toy by his den opening. He does not engage with the offerings while I'm in the room. Needs time. 9/11/24 FB79 Today, Ying displayed the same behavior as the previous enrichment note. 9/16/24 FB1261 In at den upon approach, completely hidden from view. I leave some treats for him and he begins hissing at me from within his den. He does not come out to explore the offerings, even after I've locked the kennel door and walked away. Needs more time to adjust... 9/18/24 FB79 Inside his den, Ying Yang has half his face visible with wide/dilated eyes; he remains uninterested in the treats offered and harshly hissed when i slowly brought the pointer tool in attempt to pet. 9/19/24 FB58 In his den and cannot be coaxed out with treats or when spoken to softly. He is partly visible through the den portal opening and sits with a tense face and body, hissing when he sees me. I place a tray with squeeze up at the front of the cage and when I check later, he has not touched it. 9/24/25 FB58 In his den on approach with his face visible through the portal opening, eyes wide and dilated, face tense. He hisses when he sees me and I place a tray down with squeeze up. I leave it there for him to eat when he is comfortable and later as I pass he has his head poked out and is eating from the tray. 10/4/24 FB79 Inside his den, Ying Yang hisses when he hears i open the kennel door; he hisses once again when i toss treaties near the den opening. I leave a toy and high value treat out side of the den for when he feels comfy. 10/09/24 FB1261 At front of kennel, croucehd and eating from food bowl. He begins hissing continously when he notices me and he flinches hard each time I offer a treat. He retreats into his den eventually, but pokes his head out and gives the closest treat a taste test. He approves and steps out for more, I click and reward as much as I could each time he takes another treat without hissing. CT session is brief today due to FAS, but he loves treats and eats them all when I'm not watching. Silly guy. -GAN
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Curious,Timid,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home
Recommendations comments:: Due to the behavior seen in shelter and needing a longer time to warm up, the behavior team feels Ying Yang would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 8/31/24: On approach, Ying Yang is in his den and completely hidden from view. He cannot be coaxed out when offered treats or when spoken to softly. When the den cover is removed, he is sitting curled and pressed to the back of the den shaking with a tense face and body, eyes wide and dilated and ears tilted. When the scratcher tool is slowly introduced, he remains frozen and hisses but is tolerant of a few brief and light touches. Pick up is not attempted. 9/30/24: Ying Yang is a shy, timid, and independent cat whose behavior has been consistent with the previous evaluation. He was curled up in the den looking through the side door, focused on the assessor with a tense body and wide, dilated eyes. When spoken to and opening the door, he hisses. When reaching close to offer treats on the scratcher tool, he hisses again but also curiously sniffs the treats. He hisses, lip licks, and tightens up further when pet on the head. When stroking his body, he looks back, hisses, and steps back further into the den corner. When the assessor slowly pulls the tool away, he attempts to swat at the tool but misses. Pick up was not attempted in order to reduce stress. 10/14/24 Upon re-evaluation, Ying yang is inside his den as he growls and grumbles when he hears his kennel door open; the assess a hand is brought to the den opening where he reaches out to harshly strike it multiple times. Ying Yang continues to hiss and lung at the hand from inside his den as well as reaching out to strike the hand even when held in place with no movement; he gets a hold of the assess a hand and attempts to pull it into the den with him and when released contact was attempted once more followed by more hissing and swatting/striking. Pick up was not attempted at this time Ying yang is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat/strike and is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
