BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY

Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Because of all the reported behavioral concerns noted in his previous home environment, we believe E.O would be best set up to succeed in an adult only home. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to all noted concerns displayed in a home environment, the behavior department recommends E.O be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow E.O to acclimate comfortably to his new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing E.O to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior E.O presents with outside of the care centers.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression

Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding: E.O's previous owner notes that he may growl and snap when his food bowl is approached. We recommend that E.O be left alone while eating, and that food guarding behavior modification steps (available at ASPCApro.org) be utilized if this behavior is problematic in his future home. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of E.O's mouth, and any time something is removed he should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. He should be taught the "drop" cue and trade-up games. Handling/touch sensitivity: E.O has growled, snapped and bitten when handled at times in his previous home environment, showing an discomfort with touch in certain areas. It is important to be cautious when touching him in other areas as we do not know where he may have other sensitivities. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach E.O to be more comfortable with this Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: E.O is reported to be fearful by his previous owner; he is reported to bark at strangers and keep his distance. Due to the consistent behavior displayed in shelter, the behavior department recommends an experienced adult home only until he can acclimate to his new home environment for the behavior to be further assessed. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is advised; force-free, reward based training only is recommended. Multiple bite history/risk of future aggression: E.O has a multiple-bite history and escalates quickly to snapping and biting, so this is an established behavior that he offers when he feels threatened. E.O needs careful behavior modification and management to prevent future bites. We recommend only force-free, reward-based training methods for E.O as more aversive techniques are likely to increase fear and increase the risk of aggression.
