Tabitha is on the emergency placement list due to behavior. Although she is social and enjoys affection, she now gets very agitated during cleaning time, escalating to hissing and swatting to the staff. She has potential to decline if she is constantly exposed to the process. Due to their stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I'm an independent kitty who likes to do my own thing. I am a sweet, social, older gal, looking for the perfect forever home! I am finding the shelter a little overwhelming, but when it's just you and me and some peace and quiet you'll see what a love bug I am. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home.

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 5. Red

Date of Intake: 6/25/2022

Spay/Neuter status: Yes

Is this cat having litter box issues?: No

Basic Information:: Owner died. Had to use net to remove.

Previously lived with:: 1 adult

How is this cat around strangers?: Runs and hide.

Behavior Notes: Was hissing and growling when I tried to remove.

KNOWN HISTORY:: Tabitha was brought in with limited information on her behavior history in a home environment.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 6/26/22 Lying down in the middle of the kennel, but becomes alert and hisses when the cage cover is lifted. She starts to stress meow when coaxed and will hiss again when the door opens, leaning away and tilting her ears sideways. Clearly fearful and stressed so I did not try to pet her and continued to sweet talk, blink, and play purring sounds for her. Needs time to adjust. 6/29/22 lying in back of kennel, pupils dilated, face tense and feet and tail tucked. She vocalizes when spoken to initially, then looks around the room with wide eyes as the kennel door opens. When I lower the scratcher tool in front of her she hisses so I don't push petting, then she hisses again when I give her some squeeze-ups and a silvervine stick. Nervous girl, does not trust me yet. I spend the remainder of the session slow-blinking and speaking to her softly. 6/30/22 Lying underneath the kuranda bed, pupils dilated but her face was a little less tense than yesterday. She remains in place on approach and quickly leans forward to eat the treats offered. She hisses at the scratcher so I slowly extend more to create a positive association. I speak softly and continue to offer more treats which she eats. Then she comes to the front, sits upright, meows softly on approach and curiously looks around the room. She was rewarded with compliments and more treats for later. I didn't pet her today as she is not ready for it yet. She was given a shor-line cover and a hidey box so she can feel safe and decompress. Will continue to create a positive association. 7/02/22 Resting in her hidey box. She perks up when called and meows softly as a greeting. She remains in her box throughout the interaction but would tolerate attention while remaining calm. I spent time talking softly, petting gently on her head and rewarding her with treats, which she eats right away. Seems calm today. No hissing or agitation signs were shown. 7/06/22 Lying in hidey box, cute and curled up with her bald body. She raises her head when spoken to and vocalizes then watches as I offer some treats. She steps forward after a few moments of coaxing and I click and reward each time she lets me rub her head. Did well today! No signs of escalation! 7/07/22 Resting in her box with a soft body. She perks up when called and meows softly as a greeting. She comes to the front to interact and continues to meow for attention. She was rewarded with treats which she ate right away. We continue clicker training for head pets and she leaned in for cheek rubs today. Continues to do well. Re-eval soon? 7/10/22 Sleeping in the box, but picks head up and blinks sleepily when the door opens and meows softly in response to coaxing. Could not coax her to come out of the box and didn't show interest in treats, but accepts head rubs and leans in for cheek rubs. She tolerates petting all over and seems fairly relaxed. -GAN

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Mellow

VOCAL:: Somewhat chatty

CHARACTER TYPE: : Social,Shy ,Sweet,Affectionate,Curious,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Uncomfortable with pick up,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: Tabitha seems to be uncomfortable with pick-up. This could be a response due to shelter stress and might not necessarily translate into a home environment once she is comfortable.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Tabitha's behavior has improved with time and positive interactions. She was fearful at first, swiping when attempting to pet but she now enjoys attention and gentle head scratches. Now she will greet by the front of the kennel and meows softly when first approached. She remains calm as the door opens, sniffs the assessor's hand, and then accepts petting and leans in for head rubs. She purrs softly and leans in for cheek rubs, closing her eyes, and will allow brief gentle strokes along her back. Petting was kept short along her back just to avoid getting her uncomfortable since her back is shaved and might be sensitive. She nipped with moderate pressure when applying pressure for pick-up. Tabitha is a round headed, senior tortie citizen who may need some time to warm up to her new home and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and will likely need time to warm up to her new home. Although she is displaying behaviors appropriate for cat parents with an average amount of experience, she has shown agitation during cleaning and with more extensive handling - so we recommend she goes to a home with experienced cat parents who understand feline body language and can respect her limits with petting and handling.
