Date of Intake: 9/10/2019

Basic Information:: Sweet Pea is a 7 year old stray dsh.

KNOWN HISTORY:: Sweet Pea was brought in as a stray, there is no known information on her behavior history in a home environment.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 09/15/19 Lying in back of cubby, body low and tail curled around feet. Makes and maintains eye contact as cubby door opens, then retreats through portal quickly with a low body and tail when touched with the scratcher. Keeps retreating back and forth from cubby to kennel to avoid touch. I left her some treats and toys and ended the session. Probably too skittish for room 1 – should be moved to 12 or 6. Not offensive, just avoidant and timid. 09/17/19 Crouched in back of kennel body and face tense. Makes eye contact when spoken to, then looks around the room with gaze only as body and head remains frozen in place. She retreats through her portal with a low body and tail as the cubby door opens, then tolerates petting only briefly while retreating back into her cubby. Not ready for petting – distance increasing behavior – so I give her some treats and talk to her softly. Nervous and unsure, needs more time to adjust.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Sweet,Timid,Skittish

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful

Potential challenges comments:: Sweet Pea has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Sweet Pea Has been uncomfortable and skittish during her stay in our care centers. During her assessment, she was hidden behind her hiding spot in her cubby when approaching her kennel. She retreats multiple times when opening the cubby and kennel door. When sweet talked and given a few moments, she does begin to tolerate petting and even slightly leans in for cheek rubs with a scratcher. She may need a little extra time to adjust to her future home, and some TLC. Sweet Pea tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. she may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
