During intake, Bronx was extremely fractious and would often growl, hiss, and strike while in the police carrier. Staff did not physically handle when transferring her into a den.

Basic Information:: Bronx is an approx. 7 year old, female cat. She is being surrendered after police responded to a call about a scratch incident.

KNOWN HISTORY:: Bronx was brought in with limited information on her behavior history in a home environment. Bronx is an approx. 7 year old, female cat. She is being surrendered after police responded to a call about a scratch incident. During intake, Bronx was extremely fractious and would often growl, hiss, and strike while in the police carrier. Staff did not physically handle when transferring her into a den.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 11/11/21 Hiding in cat den upon approach, completely hidden from view. She does not come out when coaxed with treats or when spoken to softly. She tolerates petting through the den with the scratcher tool briefly before hissing and swatting it out of the way. Needs time. 11/14/21 Hiding in cat den upon approach. She does not respond when spoken to, and she hisses and swats her den wall when offered treats. I speak to her softly and spray feliway before ending the session. Brief interaction today due to stress. 11/15/21 Inside den, looking out from the opening with dilated eyes. She starts to hiss, growl, and spit when the cage cover is lifted, and then continues to focus on me. Will continue to hiss, growl, and spit as I offer tuna in her food bowl, very stressed and cautious. I pushed the food bowl closer to the den and left her alone. 11/16/21 Hiding in cat den upon approach, completely hidden from view. She hisses, growls and swats when offered treats. I speak to her softly before ending the session, and when I check back on her a few minutes later her head is poking out of her den and her treats are gone. She hisses and retreats back inside when she notices me watching. 11/22/21 Her head is poking out from the den and she hisses, spits, and growls as I lift the cage cover. She blinks, lip licks, and focuses on me with wide, dilated eyes. I try to sweet talk and blink at her but she is very stressed. Will continue to spit as I offer treats by the front of the kennel, and then retreats into the den and spits from inside. 11/24/21 She was hiding in her den on approach, low growls as the door is opened and strikes from within the den. Her body softens a bit when she sees the red laser dot and follows it with her eyes but doesn't really play yet. I remained next to her talking softly, then left some treats, toys and a scratcher. She poked her head out to make eye contact after the interaction ended, then retreated back to her den. 11/28/21 Hunched in can den initially, head poking out and ears completely flat and head low. She makes and maintains eye contact when spoken to, then hisses, spits, growls and retreats back into her box. I leave her some treats in her kennel and walk away for a few moments, and when I return she is out of her den and eating the party mix. She grumbles again, then angry noms more treats when offered. I click and reward to build positive associations while speaking to her softly and slow-blinking. Food motivated, will continue to clicker train! 11/30/21 Onyx appears to be in heat today. She is at the front of her kennel, making eye contact, chirping and back peddling. She does not eat the treats offered so I am unable to clicker train at this time. She swats the scratcher tool when petting is attempted. I speak to her softly for awhile, slow-blink and end the session. *Enrichment notes continued in GAN*

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Independent

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Bronx is a beautiful tortie who does not currently allow petting or handling. Bronx was poking her head out of the cat den as the assessor approached with her ears flat and face tense. She makes eye contact when spoken to and responds with hissing and spitting. Bronx swatted the scratched tool as it got closer to her. The interacted was ended shortly to reduce stress. Bronx is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has tried to swat / scratch / bite and is currently displaying offensive-defensive behavior. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
