Summary:: During his stay in the care center Shiver Me Timbers has been observed to be highly fearful. Noted to have a tense body, tucked tail, and showing whale eye. Due to high levels of FAS a handling assessment will not be conducted at this time.
Summary (6):: 12/6/24: Shiver is laying on his side in his kennel. Handler calls to him softly to wake him up, he lifts his head but does not otherwise move. Handler reaches in and places the leash on him. Once secured the door is opened wide and he steps out on his own. He walks with his body low and at the end of the leash to create distance. He allows for handler to walk him around the yard a bit before pulling to go back into the building. He goes into kennel without issue. 12/3/2024: Shiver Me Timbers is in the back of his kennel, shaking, whale eyeing, tense body, with a tucked C-shaped tail as handler approaches. He begins to seek to exit as handler opens the kennel door. He does not come forward for treats but does eat them when thrown inside his kennel. Handler uses baby voice and kneels down by kennel, but Shiver Me Timbers begins to lip lick and frantically continues to seek exit. Handler closes door and he approaches the front with a low head. Handler is able to leash him after several attempts of him dodging the leash. Handler opens to door wide and stands to the side, he briefly thrashes backwards but proceeds to hop down and crawl out of the room. He attempts to hid under a cart in the hallway, but handler continues coaxing him. He makes it to the play yards where he is kept on leash. His tail untucks slightly, but he remains tense, whale eyeing, intermittently trembling, lip licking, and keeping his distance from handler. He spends his walk sniffing around the ground. There was not problem returning him to kennel
Summary (7):: 11/29/24: While waiting in the lobby with his finders, Shiver Me Timbers would jump up on their laps with a low, fluttering tail wag and ears back, licking their faces. He stayed close to his finders and had his ears pinned back whenever staff approached. He allowed handler to place a slip lead over his head with ease, but after his finders left he stayed crouched low to the ground in the corner. He did not take any treats that handlers threw on the ground; he would intermittently crawl forward with a low, appeasing tail wag when handlers called to him, but always retreated to the corner. Anytime handler tried to put any pressure on the leash to coax him into walking, Shiver started to baulk, thrash, and paw at the leash. Primary handler waited with him until a secondary handler was able to come assist, and during that time Shiver remained in the corner, tense and trembling. He was continuously panting, yawning, hypervigilant, and began to vocalize (whining, grumbling) after waiting for a while. Eventually, a second handler came and offered more high-value treats. Shiver ignored chicken and sniffed cheese, but did not eat any. Secondary handler was able to place a second lead over Shiver's head, and handlers were able to jog with Shiver back to medical for vaccines. Shiver remained tense and crouched with his ears pinned back while walking back to medical. After receiving vaccines, handlers again tried to jog with Shiver back to his kennel. He baulked against the leashes and thrashed, eventually falling to the ground and rolling. Handlers attempted to keep the leashes untangled, and Shiver eventually stopped rolling. Handlers were then able to run him into the kennel room and muscle him into his kennel; Shiver remained tense with a tucked tail while going back to his kennel. A hook was used to remove his leashes after he was in his kennel.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Shiver Me Timbers so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to high levels of fear we recommend an adult only home. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Shiver Me Timbers has been observed to be highly fearful during his stay in the care center. Noted to have a tense trembling body, whale eye and a tucked tail. Shiver has been observed to escalate to thrashing while on leash. It is important to always go slow and give Shiver the option to walk away from any social interaction. Shiver should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Shiver's choice to approach a new person or thing. Shiver would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period.
