Violet
Hello, my name is Violet. My animal id is #207497. I am a desexed female brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 6 months 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 1/31/2025, with the surrender reason stated as other.
Violet is at risk due to behavior concerns. Violet originally came to ACC as a stray. She displayed signs of deterioration then, hypersalivating and flipping her drain cover. She was adopted but recently returned due to destructive tendencies in the home and not being a good fit. Violet is once again struggling with the stress of the shelter environment. She has been observed to flip over the drain covers and kuranda bed in her kennel while hypersalivating. Outside of her kennel, Violet is a sociable dog who greatly enjoys treats and attention from humans. Medically, Violet has dental disease, is overweight, and being treated for pododermatitis on her front feet.

Let's brush up on some canine body language together! I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I don't always like to share my food, toys or bedding with other animals. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. A volunteer writes: Silly, snuggly and so much fun. Violet loves to chase toys and smoosh against her "hooman" for maximum contact. An expert splooter, she plays with her toys in her small kennel like a good girl. She had passers-by with their dogs smile at us as she sat quietly by my side or perked up for a tasty treat. Violet is an excitable love bug with much joy to share. Could you be her new family today? My #BoroughBreak Buddy Writes: All she wants is pets, she might be a shortie but she jumped into the car no problem, she was also able to jump into bed and promptly pushed me over to lie on my chest for belly rubs. It was a hysterical position and she was so loving. She did have some mouthiness- but it was more to say come back and keep petting me!!! She responded to a "no" and I was able to resume giving her all the love she deserves. She seems mostly potty trained. She also really didn't notice my chinchilla except for some initial sniffs at the cage and then went on to explore the rest of the room. Once she was eye level with the chinchilla she watched her for a bit and was very easily redirected away from the chinchilla and out of the room.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No young children (under 13): Due to resource guarding and social hyperarousal we recommend a home with no children.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Social hyperarousal,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition
Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Violet has been observed to become tense, hover, and vocalize with a toy in her possession. We advise against ever removing items from Violet's possession without safely trading for an item of greater or equal value. Guidance from a professional trainer is highly recommended to aid in safely managing this behavior in a new home environment. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Basic Manners/Poor Impulse Control/: Violet is reported to jump frequently when seeking attention as well as resorting to mounting. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach her to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners and Impulse Control. Social Hyperarousal: Violet is reported to mount her previous owner frequently. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used to teach Violet to remain calm when people and other exciting things are around. She should be rewarded with treats when calm. If she escalates to jumping or mouthing, people should immediately walk away from and separate themselves from Violet. Please see handout on Arousal. Mouthiness/ Poor Bite Inhibition: Violet is reported to be mouthy at times with her previous owner. We recommend never playing with bare hands – always with a toy - and ending play or attention whenever Violet puts teeth on skin. She should be rewarded with attention and treats when she stops and/or when she is seeking attention in alternate ways. Please see handout on Mouthiness.
